The Wisconsin Sierra Club is working with tribes, environmental and community groups to shut down Enbridge Line 5 in Wisconsin. This week more than 500 people watched a virtual WI DNR hearing where almost all 79 people testifying called for denial of wetlands and waterways permits and the shut down of Line 5. Our 2012 program series kicked off on April 19 with Nan Taylor from the Michigan Historic Preservation Network. We learned much more about why it's so important to preserve historic buildings in Elk Rapids. The next program will be held on Thursday, May 17 and is about the Bay View area just north of Petoskey where 360 cottages are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Historic Paradise Pines Cabins are scheduled to be torn down. The cabins were built in the early 1940s by Lyle Paradise. They operated non-stop until just a month ago when they were vacated. We've been told this beautiful area will become a new senior housing project.

"Treasures from the Holidays" will include 75 nativity scenes from a private collector in Traverse City. This major event will begin on Friday, Dec. 2. Admission is $5.00 for adults and free for children under 12. This is an exhibit you won't want to miss. Go to elkrapidshistory.org for more details and dates when the museum will be open.

We have a great program coming up on Thurs. Nov. 17 with Chris Doyal of the Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve. This will feature some spectacular underwater photography of shipwrecks and the Bay. The program begins at 7 pm at our new home 301 Traverse St. former Methodist Church. See you there.

September brings an important event at 301 Traverse St. The 110th anniversary of the old Methodist Church building on Saturday, Sept. 24. We will celebrate with an open house from 1-4. Come join us for tours of the building and for an update on the progress we've made converting the church to a museum.
