The next project is a 2000 Trek R200 recumbent. Only recumbent that Trek ever built. This was only offered for about 2 years with a MSRP of $1749.00 The project was abandoned by Trek and all remaining inventory was sold to a buyer that apparently dumped them on the internet for $600 each. I am very interested in this bike. It has 40 Sram gear options, aluminum frame, comfortable adjustable seat, short wheel base (SWB) and is relatively light weight. As a collector, I like that it was only built for a short period making it a rare oddity. It’s in very good condition so it won’t take long to get it out on display. Replacement parts are probably going to be hard to find if needed. Specs in last photo.

Unfortunately this one is not getting rebuilt. In my opinion it wasn’t worth the time or money for restoration. I realized that one of the prior owners had used sandpaper on the finishes and chrome. The chainguard had been welded, the seat was torn and the tank headlight assembly was broken in areas. I was able to salvage a good set of wheels and a few rare parts. Girls bikes from this era aren’t in great demand these days. Sorry to disappoint.

Next week’s restoration project is a Huffy Galaxie middle weight single speed cruiser. It was probably on the high end of the Huffy line up with chrome fenders, tank with double headlights and a rear rack. It appears to be all original parts, paint and decals. I’m guessing that it is from the mid 60’s. It should come back to life by the end of the week.

The 1965 Sears chrome Fleetwood is restored and on display. This 3 speed ladies bike was probably built by Murray of Ohio for Sears. Some of the Fleetwoods were built in Austria in 65. Sears marketed this bike as a “lightweight” with 26 x 1 3/8 wheels. They sold new for $49.95 ($531.00 in today’s money) The museum in Elizabeth will be open tomorrow and every Saturday from 10-2. Admission is always free.

The 1965 Sears Fleetwood 3 speed girls bike is all cleaned and ready for reassembly tomorrow. Probably built by Murray of Ohio. I found a Sears ad from 1965, Fleetwood, Sears finest lightweight, all chrome plated, fully equipped and “shifts like a motorcycle”. The bike originally sold for $49.95. I found one ad listing the boy’s version for $4500. Good luck!

Jamis bicycles is going to get a display wall next week. I have 8 new in box, late 80’s, early 90’s Jamis mountain bike and road bike frames, a vintage Jamis dealer sign and a complete Jamis Quest bike. It will be a big improvement for the lower level in the museum. This was all found in the old bicycle shop in Platteville that had been closed for many years. Tim Ingram, owner of Momentum Bikes in Platteville has a whole basement full on vintage parts from the old bike shop that he is trying to sell at reasonable prices.

Next week’s project is a 1965 Sears 3 speed girls Fleetwood. The bike was actually built by Murray for Sears. The hub is a Japanese Shimano 333 series. It appears to be original and complete. This model sold for $49.95 in 1965, $531 adjusted for inflation The chrome plating is a little pitted but should polish up nice. Looking forward to bringing this one back to life.
