⏪🕰 It's - we're going back to 1923 in Camden County when this floating road to Elizabeth City was built. The floating road was replaced in the 1940s by the Camden Causeway.

‼️👀If you missed our History for Lunch on the History of Shell Castle Island, visit the link below to watch Anne Mitchell Whisnant, PhD's presentation.

The island was a bustling site of homes and wharves from the 1780s to the 1810s. It served as a transfer point for cargo shipping in and out of coastal North Carolina through Ocracoke Inlet. North Carolina merchant John Gray Blount and Portsmouth pilot John Wallace owned and developed Shell Island, which was worked by dozens of African American people they enslaved. At its height, Shell Castle boasted numerous buildings, enterprises, and even a lighthouse. The owners marketed it internationally with 19th-century “swag”: creamware pitchers embossed with an image of the community—one of which is on display at the Museum of the Albemarle.

🏖🏄‍♀️🦈☀️ was this past weekend on August 30th. We're celebrating by sharing these photos.

Nags Head emerged as a prominent summer resort in the 1830s for the region's wealthiest planters, who traveled by steamboat or schooner with their livestock and furnishings. The area's popularity led to the 1838 construction of a large 200-room hotel, followed later by Dr. William G. Pool's pioneering oceanfront cottage, which established the historic district known as The Unpainted Aristocracy.

‼️Don't miss seeing this Race Kart 2010 Eclipse Flat Chassis on display in our lobby, the race kart is on display through September 28th.

Racing in northeastern NC is thriving. It is embedded in our lives, whether we participate or are amongst those in the grandstands. From horse, dog, and turtle racing to cars, trucks, bikes, boats, and record-breaking running, this multidisciplinary exhibit features racing at its finest—fast, dirty, exhilarating, and loud!

‼️This exhibit closes in February 2029. 📌FREE and open to the public!
