Eldred WWII Museum was created to preserve and interpret the history of World War II. The museum commemorates the contribution of 40 million Americans that supported the 16 million fighting soldiers during the epic struggle to defend freedom and democracy against the forces of greed and aggression. We strive to shape a stronger and better future for the United States by helping the present and future generations to understand the lessons of WWII and the 20th century.

In observance of Memorial Day, my district offices are now closed through Monday, May 25.

It is important to remember the uniqueness of this Memorial Day Weekend because it is when we honor the men and women who actually gave their lives while serving our nation with dignity, bravery and distinction.

There is a sign in my office with a quote attributed to John Wayne which says, β€œCourage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.”

Those who have stepped between us and those who would destroy America and what it stands for have demonstrated their courage in the face of that fear.

Those we honor in ceremonies this weekend are those for whom those fears, fears they overcame, were justified.

And they did it for you, they did it for me and they did it for our children. They deserve being honored and remembered!

Though there are many of us who have a personal loss story that does indeed impact our hearts on Memorial Day, the purpose of this day is to consider the profound implications of what would drive one to "lay down one's life for another".

If we truly do that, if we honestly search for the answer to what motivated those who have made the ultimate sacrifice we are confronted with the only appropriate response of thanking "God that such devoted men and women lived".

If we truly search we will also find that what motivated them relate to the principles those who fought for and died for to give us this great republic, and again "Thank God that such selfless individuals lived."

Their sacrifice is a debt we can never fully repay. We owe it to them to tell their stories and do our part as citizens of this great nation to ensure they did not die in vain.
