Beacon Forum, November 10, 1982.
Letter to the Editor From a Railroader's Daughter--"Sitting here in Agency, Iowa, the constant rumble of huge trucks traveling on Rt. 34 in front of our home, a distant train whistle is heard. The tracks in the back, like so many memories in the back of my mind. It will soon be four years since my father hung up his white switchman's hat for the last time. "Once a railroader, always a railroader"....just ask one of them the time of day. The Book of Rules was our way of life. These dedicated men fought wars of their own--the weather, soot, cinders, burns, constant danger, the "Extra Board", the "bumping system", the meeting of deadlines, priorities, seven days or nights a week. No strikes allowed. My father suffered constant pain, one leg shorter than the other from jumping off cars. Diabetes was discovered when a burn from a fuzee didn't heal. Railroading was in his blood, a pedigree and breed all their own. Their overalls, blue shirts, red hankies, white hats, worn with as much pride as any four-star General. They were a very important part of American heritage. Returning here from living on the West Coast, I knew I was returning home as I saw my first, in a long time, railroad car marked "Rock Island Lines"--hearing again in the reflection of my mind, my father's reminder, "Respect the crossing signs--they are not only your bread and butter, they are your safety." I am very grateful that the job that my father loved so much didn't directly take his life. There is a piece of the "Rock" in each of us ever associated with the Rock Island Lines. As a child, hearing Dad speak of Eldon being the "end of the line" didn't mean what it does today. I'm interested in meeting people who feel as I do--Eldon isn't the end of the line. My dream is a living Memorial from those of us who care, for those who served the Rock Island Lines. I feel the Eldon depot needs to be restored into a Museum, a place to go and remember. A place to care and share, to keep the Old Rock alive. Those interested in doing something may contact me.

It took a while but this project was taken up in 2001. The Rock Island depot in Eldon is celebrating their accomplishments today, August 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come to Eldon and join the commemoration.

Eldon Forum, Aug. 29, 1974. Larry Reisch, 30, of rural Eldon, received a lifesaving award from Governor Ray at the Iowa State Fair on Wednesday, August 21. The award was given as a result of Reisch's action in April, when he saved the life of Ernest Peek, 41, of Ottumwa. Peek was operating a crane that touched a high voltage wire and Reisch pulled Peek from the controls of the machine.

Star News (Eldon), August 20, 1942.
Albert Armintrout Home Built in 1908. Note Found in Bottle Aug. 18.
C. A. Wood, of Ottumwa, was a caller at the Star News office Tuesday, August 18 and brought with him a note found in a whiskey bottle which had been placed in a partition in the Albert Armintrout home located at the end of Caster Street in Eldon. Mr. Wood and his assistants were insulating the Armintrout home when the bottle was found. The note was written on heavy building paper measuring 7 by 11 inches and read "Built by J. M. Lynch, January 1908, and he's a good Indian. Signed: J. G. Lynch." Mr. Wood thought this unusual find rated publicity so we pass the information along to the readers of the Star News.

Dave's Hardware Shows Revolutionary New Cooktop...First in the World.--Dave's Hardware was the first to have and show the newest revolution in cooking. It wasn't to be presented to the public until the Iowa State Fair, however, Dave Benson was chosen to be the first to show it in the world. He had it set up at the Wapello County Regional Fair in his display booth. What is it? It's Amana's newest cooktop range, which features halogen quartz burners that produce virtually instantaneous heat and light. Even though a halogen burner gets hot and the cooking utensil gets hot, the glass top that separates the two doesn't get hot enough to burn spills, making it easy to keep it clean. The one model Dave had is already sold to Bill and Mary Campbell for their new home. There will be more for sale. As acceptance grows, it is believed they will follow the way of microwaves. Amana expects the market to continue to heat up and will be expanding the line of cooktops to three models. Eldon may be small but we can still be first in some things.

Eldon Forum, Aug. 23, 1917.
A. P. Kelly Sold Business to R. R. Potts and J. W. Reed.
An important news item got by in last week's issue. No mention was made of the transfer of the cigar store and news stand owned by A. P. Kelly. Mr. Kelly has sold his business to J. W. Reed and R. R. Potts, and the place is now operated under the firm name of Reed & Potts. Mr. Kelly bought the business from Ed. Friend several months ago and since coming here from Chicago has been one of Eldon's best boosters. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly plan on returning to Chicago about September 1. Jim and Russ are now laced up together in a business way. They're surely out to make the venture go successfully, because if one cannot think of the right thing at the right time, the other can. They are about the gamest pair we know of. It's a safe bet though, that Jim won't bet Russ any more dollars that he can't climb a telegraph pole.
Perhaps the interior of their store resembled this one taken in Anamosa, Iowa around the same time period. Photo courtesy of Fortepan Iowa.
