El Otro Camino (Another Road Home), traces the breadth of Cesar A. Martinez‘s work, rooted in Chicano identity in shape by Frontera, geography ecology and immigrant dynamics. These were my favorite works of his art.

Interesting history about our Fort Bliss.

William Wallace Smith Bliss, was a soldier, born in Whitehall, New York, August 17, 1815. He was the son of Captain John Bliss (West Point, 1811) and Olive Hall Simonds and graduated at the United States Military Academy in 1833.

He was a West Point graduate at 17, he taught math there and he became interested in the various Native American tribes and learned a number of their tongues and studied their culture, yet he was involved in the operations against the Cherokee during the Indian Removal process in the Southwest. He became chief of staff to General Zachary Taylor in the Mexican–American War, earning brevets to lieutenant colonel for gallantry.

He married Mary Elizabeth Taylor, youngest daughter of Zachary on December 5, 1848 and from March 4, 1849 until July 9, 1850, he was private secretary to President Taylor.

He died unexpectedly of yellow fever in Pascagoula, Mississippi on August 5, 1853.

Fort Bliss was named in honor of Col. Bliss in March, 1854. Col. Bliss' remains were removed from the Girod Street Cemetery in New Orleans, LA and moved to the Fort Bliss National Cemetery in 1955.

Have you spotted this work of art that is depicting iconic local artists, such as Abraham Chavez, Art Lewis and Rosa Guerrero. It also has Jorge Arias, a Mexican-American professional wrestler also known as “Sin Cara".

It’s a creation by Artist Jesus "Cimi" Alvarado who also collaborated with Victor "Mask" Casas and Martin "Blast" Zubia to bring the mural to life. It is in downtown El Paso at the Roderick Artspace Lofts.

The historic Bowie Bakery near downtown remains open since it was established in 1951, serving classic favorites like conchas, empanadas, and seasonal specialties like Rosca de Reyes.

En el Segundo Barrio several small bakeries operated throughout the historic neighborhood, but Bowie Bakery endured as a cornerstone of the neighborhood.

The Brenner Department Store located at 312 E. Overland Avenue in downtown El Paso, built in 1904, occupied a key downtown spot, contributing to El Paso’s retail landscape alongside other major stores like The Popular, Switzer’s, and Glass Apparel back in the early 1900’s.

Today the building has been beautifully restored in the heart of downtown and it now has spacious apartments.. It is an impressive work of art.
