Project XV had an absolute blast at Illinois State University's Center For Civic Engagement Festival on the Quad, rubbing shoulders with fantastic students and getting a surprise visit from some familiar faces from El Paso Gridley!

Today is David Strother’s *183rd* Birthday!!

David was the first African American to vote in Illinois. When he went to cast that historic vote, he was turned away. But he persevered, returned to the polling place, & made history.
He was raised in Lexington, Missouri, and came with his family to Peoria where we was a cook on a riverboat. When the Civil War erupted David went to work as a cook for Company G, 17th Illinois Infantry. He met men from Woodford County who encouraged him to move to El Paso, which he did in 1864. David set up a barbershop and was joined by his younger brother Charles. The Strother’s were extremely popular and their shop in the basement at Front & Central was a busy place. Every week until his death in 1905, David ran an ad in the El Paso Journal, advertising smooth shaves and “Scalp Food Tonic”. His small home on 3rd Street held an impressive library, including the works of Shakespeare and 2 very nice violins. When David died, his obituary took up a full page, and the news showed up in papers across the country.

Project XV Museum is built around his historic barbershop! 💈
