#BotanistLens: Ground cover guardians of a woodland garden

Ground covers, plants growing on the lowest layer of a woodland are the guardians of the most fragile layer. Invasives can easily encroach and take over a forest floor or a woodland garden, if the ground is bare and doesn't have ample ground covers forming a thicket.
Ground covers don't have to be mundane or even all foliage. London Towns woodland gardens ground covers are plentiful in color, shape and interest. Some of these interesting ground covers are featured in our members and volunteers only pre-order sale and lost more will be a highlight in our in-person fall plant sale.

Curious what's happening out at the Gresham Estate? Get an update on archaeology conducted at the site this summer.

Professors Steve Lenik, PhD and Liza Gijanto, PhD and students from St. Mary’s College conducted an initial archaeology assessment of the grounds. The archaeologists and students spent four weeks at Gresham between June and July 2021. During that time, they conducted a shovel test pit (STP) survey of the property.

#BotanistLens: Naturalizing ephemerals of London Town, bringing everlasting joy.

London Town Gardens is a host to a diverse variety of plants. The best of best are surely the delicate naturalizing ephemerals.

As much as London Town Gardens beauty lies in its exquisite collections, it extends beyond into the rolling hillsides, landscape with peaking river views, ravines and mature woods filled with dappled shade. What grows best in this calm dappled shade is a collection that is ephemeral, but one that brings everlasting joy. When the ephemerals are naturalized in a landscape, the joy unfolds every year.

Naturalized ephemerals/bulbs are best suited for a woodland garden. But they aren't limited to a large space, or only dappled shade. As long as naturalized plants are grown in an undistrubed area (no mow, least foot tarrfic/disturbance), you've got a bulb pantry for the long haul.

Naturalized plants are "thoroughly established, yet not native, and have not caused extensive damage or spread". Here is some good info.: An Introduction to Native Plants for SC Landscapes | Home & Garden Information Center (clemson.edu)

Some of the best naturalizing daffodil bulbs found at London Town include the 'Ice Follies' and 'Poeticus recurvus'. Ice follies are bright white/yellow, tall, hardy and last way into late spring, overall an outstanding daffodil for any garden. Poeticus recurvus on the other hand has a delicate form, it is one of the sweetest daffodil out of all 12 divisions. Yes! Daffodils have not one, but 12 divisions. Classification System | The Daffodil Society

Amongst Tulips, the naturalizing 'Tulipa turkestanica' is one of the prettiest Tulips found growing at London Town. Most commonly found Tulips are large, bold and bright which is wonderful in a space where you can provide added critter detterents, if needed. But for undisturbed garden beds, naturalizing daffodils are the best.

Check out London Towns pre-order plant sale to get some of these beautiful hand selected and, tried and tested at London Town ephemerals: https://historiclondontown.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/historiclondontown/giftstore.jsp
Next week, also check out more info. on the other exquisite ephemerals and ground covers suited to the Mid-Atlantic, coming soon in our Sept. plant sale! -Meenal Harankhedkar, Director of Horticulture

Happy National Dog Day!
Though our couch-dwelling companions don't usually count as wildlife, North America is home to a number of indigenous canine species.
Prior to European colonization and expansion, Gray Wolves (Canis lupus) and Red Wolves (Canis lupus rufus) roamed across Maryland and the eastern seaboard.
Both Gray Foxes (Urocyon cinereoargentius) and Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are commonly found around Maryland, though the Gray Fox is nocturnal, so we don't see them as often as the somewhat more diurnal Red Fox.
When large predators (wolves, bears, etc) moved west to avoid encroaching human populations, the Coyote (Canis latrans) stepped in. Originally hailing from the Southwestern United States, these canine predators expanded their range eastward to consume the prey left by the departure of the other predators. The first coyote was recorded in Maryland in 1972, and they've now been recorded statewide.
When you visit London Town, it's unlikely that you'll meet an indigenous canine (unless you come across our fox pal, Rumney), but you may well meet some domesticated dogs. We welcome all leashed dogs to explore the trails and enjoy the sniffs. Please enjoy these photos of dogs at London Town and share your photos of your pup on site in the comments!

Lovely write up in the Cap-Gazette of Celtic Weekend
I was invited to try the lathe at the Celtic Weekend.
By chance, will the garden be open next Tuesday? (The schools are closed due to the election.)
