This powerful exhibition showcases how generations of African American artists have used printmaking as a primary medium, a tool for collaboration, and a democratic way to share their art. Works selected are on loan from the collection of Raven Editions and were curated by Dr. Curlee Raven Holton.

Opening this weekend, "What Remains/The Vietnam War and its Reckoning" at the George Mason University gallery, featuring work from intercultural artists who served during the Vietnam War.

Through sculpture, paintings, and repurposed materials, this exhibition presents insights and context around the conflict and the intersecting identities of artists whose service and experiences transformed their lives and their artistic practice.

In this behind-the-scenes look, master printmaker, artist, and scholar Dr. Curlee Raven Holton demonstrates the serigraphy printmaking process on the press.

From proofing to the final “bon à tirer” — French for “good to print” — every layer is deliberate. It’s a process that calls for precision, patience, and a deep understanding of the medium.

Shared in association with the "Printmaking and the Unconventional Pathways of African American Artists" exhibition, curated by Dr. Holton, on view at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center until September 6, 2026.

"They Are Coming" by Curlee Raven Holton was recently acquired by the Michener Art Museum.

Water, as it often appears in Holton's work, symbolizes spirituality and comfort, but also danger. The piece is a response to anti-immigration sentiments in America. Holton wished to highlight the irrational fear drives this discrimination, especially towards those from predominantly Muslim countries, emphasizing the continued presence of immigrants in American life.

Special thanks to Dr. Laura Turner Igoe, the Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest Chief Curator at Michener. Museum purchase funded by the Estate of Harry W. Lownsbury and the Mandel Society for Art Acquisition.
