As one of Easton's oldest surviving buildings, Bachmann has witnessed centuries of change in our community. From its role as a gathering place in colonial Easton to its connections to the American Revolution, this historic site has plenty of stories to tell!

But Bachmann is just one stop along the way! Our Historic District Walking Tours take you through downtown Easton, highlighting the buildings, people, and events that shaped the city we know today.

This Day in History: October 19, 1781

On this day in 1781, British General Charles Cornwallis surrendered his army to American and French forces at Yorktown, Virginia, marking a major turning point in the American Revolution.

Hundreds of miles away, the people of Easton were living through that same Revolution. Imagine the conversations news of Yorktown might have sparked inside the 1753 Bachmann Publick House. Travelers sharing updates from the war, neighbors debating what victory meant for their future, and families wondering if peace was finally within reach.

For some, the news may have brought celebration and hope. For others, particularly those loyal to the British Crown, the future remained uncertain.

A little something sweet from the archives!

Happy National Dessert Day! Did you know that the NCHGS Library & Archives is home to a variety of historic recipe books filled with dishes, desserts, and baking traditions from years past?

Recipe books offer a unique glimpse into everyday life throughout history. Beyond the ingredients and instructions, they tell stories about the foods people enjoyed, the traditions they shared, and the ways recipes were passed down through families and communities. Some recipes might look familiar, while others may leave you wondering just how they managed to make them work!

To celebrate National Dessert Day, we're digging into our collections and sharing a couple of sweet recipes for you to try at home! Whether you're an experienced baker or just looking for something fun to make, we hope these recipes inspire you to bring a little history into your kitchen.

After all, history isn't just something you read about in books or see in museums. Sometimes, it's something you can bake, share, and enjoy!

Step inside after the sun goes down and discover the very real fears and dangers of life in 18th-century Easton. From spies, treason, and divided loyalties to dangerous travel, fire, disease, bloodletting, and tooth extraction, the past could be a frightening place.

And remember: this is NOT a ghost tour. The stories you’ll hear are rooted in historical evidence and supported by materials from the NCHGS archives. Sometimes, real history is unsettling enough.
