The Sigal Museum is Northampton County, Pennsylvania’s leading institution of local history. See American History Made in Northampton County!

The Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society (NCHGS) works to share the stories of Northampton County’s past to encourage personal reflection, community dialogue, and an understanding of history’s impact on our lives. Year-round our goals
are to use the important lessons from our history to offer the community dynamic tours, family programs for diverse populations, thought-provoking exhibitions, and special events. We also offer student and adult research opportunities. We preserve three historic structures, maintain a public garden, and an outstanding museum collection. We also publish books and newsletters, offer curriculum-based educational tours to students, and custom group tours and talks. We proudly manage the Sigal Museum, Bachmann Publick House, the Jacob Nicholas House, the Mixsell Illick House, the Kressler Garden, the Jane S. Moyer Library and Archives. It's the first thing you see when you walk into the Sigal Museum, but how much do you know about our historic pumper truck?

Long before modern fire engines, flashing lights, and powerful hoses, fighting fires was a community effort that required plenty of teamwork and muscle!

Did you know? In the 18th century, firefighting looked a little different than it does today! Bucket brigades were essential! Community members formed lines to pass buckets of water from nearby wells or other water sources to the fire.

Early fire engines were powered by people! Rather than relying on motors, hand-operated pumpers required teams of people to work together to pump water onto the flames.

Fire prevention was everyone's responsibility! In many colonial communities, residents were expected to keep leather fire buckets on hand and help their neighbors when disaster struck.

These early firefighting methods laid the groundwork for the fire departments and equipment we rely on today.

Next time you visit the Sigal Museum, take a moment to appreciate the historic pumper truck that welcomes you into our lobby! It's more than just an impressive piece of equipment. It's a reminder of the teamwork, innovation, and community spirit that have shaped firefighting throughout history.

A little appreciation for the people who make it all possible!

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of coming together for our annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic to celebrate the incredible individuals who dedicate their time, energy, and talents to NCHGS!

From welcoming visitors and leading tours to supporting programs, caring for our historic sites, and working behind the scenes, our volunteers play an essential role in everything we do. Their passion for local history and commitment to our community help us bring the stories of Northampton County to life every day.

We were also thrilled to recognize Chris Funk as our L. Anderson Daub Community Leader! Chris's dedication, generosity, and contributions to NCHGS have made a lasting impact, and we are so grateful for everything she does.

To Chris and all of our wonderful volunteers, THANK YOU! Your hard work, enthusiasm, and continued support mean more to us than words can express. We truly couldn't do what we do without you!

ATTENTION EASTON AND P'BURG FOOTBALL FANS!

It's more than just a game. This year, we're taking the rivalry beyond the field!

As we gear up for Rinks, Races, & Rivalries: Rivalry on the River, we're putting a new spin on the Easton–Phillipsburg rivalry, and this time, everyone has a chance to help their team win!

Instead of paid admission, we're asking attendees to bring canned goods to support the ProJeCt of Easton Food Pantry at St. John's Lutheran Church!

But what's a rivalry without a little friendly competition?

We're dividing donations into two teams: Easton vs. P'burg!

When you arrive, donate your canned goods in support of your favorite school. The team that collects the most canned goods will earn some serious bragging rights AND a special prize!

The winning school will have its jerseys proudly displayed in the Sigal Museum's front window following the panel, where they'll remain until after the Thanksgiving Day game!

Join us as we celebrate the history, traditions, and unforgettable moments of this legendary rivalry, all while coming together to support our local community.

Our Making the Past Fall Workshop Series continues with Basket Weaving, the second workshop of the season!
