Lawrence Fine Art is delighted to announce representation of the Italian-American artist Ralph Cuomo. Cuomo was born into a large Italian-American immigrant family on the East End of Long Island. Cuomo was the only one of ten siblings to go to college. Not long after he returned to the family farm where he would spend the rest of his life painting. Please inquire.

Paul Resika, “Provincetown, Canaletto.” Paul Resika, 97, is the last living student of Hans Hofmann and major figure in American art. Like many great artists, he is known for making the area around his home his own. In this case, it would be the waters and light and boats and buildings of Provincetown which he has simplified into geometric shapes. Contact us for works available.

Untitled, abstracted landscape, Mercedes Matter. Inspired by the teachings of Hans Hofmann and her close relationship with Arshile Gorky, Matter adopted a painterly technique of gestural abstraction that was driven by oppositional forces in nature. For Matter, painting was a “process”, a product of deep contemplation. Matter was also a devoted teacher and co-founded the New York Studio School with Charles Cajori. Available. Please inquire.

Lawrence Fine Art is delighted to announce representation of the estate of Italian-American artist Fred Cuomo (1929-2002). Self-taught, Cuomo was one of ten siblings in a tight-knit immigrant farming family on the East End of Long Island. The only one of his siblings to go to college (Columbia), Cuomo returned home to the farm where he would paint the rest of his life. Pictured: Untitled, 1969. Please contact us for more details.

Lawrence Fine Art is delighted to announce the representation of the Italian-American artist Fred Cuomo (1929-2002). Born the large Italian farming family on the East End of Long Island (he was one of 10 siblings), Cuomo was the only one of his family to go to college (Columbia). But soon after, he returned to the family homestead where he would spend the rest of his life. Cuomo was largely self-taught and his abstractions, geometric in conception, have a stillness, even a distance, that reminds us a bit of Moradi. Cuomo never married. Lawrence Fine Art specializes in rediscoveries of worthy artists. Please inquire.

John Ferren, “Moonlight-Utah,” 1948. John Ferren was an important early American modernist painter and bridge between the European artistic avant-garde and the incipient American artistic avant-garde. He spent his formative years in Paris in the 1930s and was one of the only American artists respected by his European peers (as per Gertrude Stein). Contact us for works available.

If you plan to be in Montreal anytime soon and you are interested the history of how our particular epoch of art came to be, then we highly recommend “Berthe Weill: Art Dealer of the Parisian Avant Garde.” This tiny Jewish woman, daughter of a poor rag picker, discovered and popularized Picasso (she was the first to buy his work), Matisse and Chagall, among others. She gave Modigliani his first and only show—a hugely controversial affair. There are many threads to explore here: Jews as outsiders, women as outsiders, issues of class. However, what is indisputable is that without Weill, the story of modern art would be very different. Go see.
