The Drawing Room is pleased to present "Mary Ellen Bartley: New Photographs," on view todays through June 20th.

Celebrated for her nuanced explorations of the printed book and innovative approaches to the still life genre, Bartley has developed a body of work rich in metaphor, pictorial depth and tactility. This exhibition features selections from four ongoing series: Morandi's Books, Blue Books,
Reading November and Split Stacks.

"GUSTAVO BONEVARDI Water and Color on Paper" will be on view from April 2nd through May 16th. The exhibition of the artist's new abstractions includes a series of radiant compositions in gouache and a suite of indigo watercolors that range from small scale studies to a diptych measuring five feet wide.

Each work evolves gradually through a process that is controlled but not premeditated. Bonevardi guides a spectrum of water-based pigments onto the blank paper surface, forming speckles, orbs and diffuse veils of color. Throughout, his intuitive gestures generate images that suggest botanical forms, aquatic realms, and atmospheric realms.

After undergraduate studies at Rhode Island School of Design, Hector Leonardi received his MFA from Yale University, where he studied color theory and painting with the influential teacher, Josef Albers. For many years, Leonardi divided his time between Long Island and Manhattan. In New York, he maintained a studio in the bustling flower district and taught at Parsons School of Design.
The artist began spending time on Eastern Long Island in the 1970s, renting a house on the cliffs of Montauk with 360° views of the ocean. He now lives in Bridgehampton, where his light-filled studio in a converted potato barn is bordered by gardens and farmland.

A deep appreciation for the natural environment informs his abstractions. The title of his 2021 painting, Nevicata suits the swirling motion of large white dabs of paint silhouetted against a field of deep grey.

Catch the final weekend of "Snow Day" in East Hampton. The gallery will be open Saturday & Sunday from 11 - 5!

As early as 135 BC, Chinese scholar Han Yin wrote "Flowers of plants and trees are generally five-pointed, but those of snow, which are called "ying" are always six-pointed".
Nearly seventeen centuries later, in 1611, the German scientist Johannes Kepler wrote: “There must be a cause why snow has the shape of a six-cornered starlet. It cannot be chance.”

By 1637, the French philosopher, scientist and mathematician René Descartes, made stylized representations of snowflake structures in his Discours de la methode. Ultimately, through the use of compound microscopes, 17th century scientists were able to see for the first time the complex symmetrical patterns of snow crystals.

The photomicrographs of Wilson A. Bentley (American, 1865-1931) are celebrated not only because of their astonishing beauty but because they were the world's first photographs of snowflakes. To make his negatives, Bentley used a large bellows camera coupled with his microscope, glass slides and a feather.

To silhouette the intricate structures against a dark background, Bentley required further innovation: "After developing the negatives, he needed to execute one more vital step. Applying a photography technique known as blocking or blocking out, Bentley spent hours using an etching knife and other sharp-pointed tools to scrape away the dark emulsion around the snow crystal's edges in order to produce a single aesthetically pleasing image. The artistic side of Bentley didn't override the scientific one, however. He used a duplicate negative for this final process, always retaining the original as documentary evidence."

Like many of her New York School contemporaries, Jane Freilicher spent several months a year retreating from the city on Long Island’s East End. In 1960 she and her husband built a home overlooking Mecox Bay in Watermill, where her studio provided a range of landscape vistas that inspired her paintings throughout the seasons.

When painting in winter, she usually worked from direct observation and on a small scale. This fostered an immediacy in her process that suited the quickly shifting weather conditions by the sea. Within her subtle snowscapes, bare branches, grasses and evergreen foliage articulating the expanses of white, and delicate atmospheric effects hover above the horizon.

Kathryn Lynch approaches her memory-based paintings with a lyrical freedom and imbues each composition with a sense of wonder and nostalgic resonance. As in many of her nocturnal subjects, her snowscape "Full Winter Moon" captures flickering points of light, silhouetted here against a midnight blue sky and framed by evergreen branches laden with snow.

The gallery's winter exhibition "SNOW DAY" will be on view in East Hampton through February 27th. Open Satuday & Sunday 11-5, and weekdays by appointment.

Have a peaceful evening!

Since the 1970s, when Bartlett’s pioneering paintings first attracted critical acclaim, the artist’s work has been widely shown and collected. She graduated from Mills College and received her MFA from Yale University. Her work is included in the collections of the Cleveland Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Modern.

Known for her rigorous studio practice, Bartlett developed a system early in her career to sustain a drawing routine wherever she traveled. Whether vacationing by the sea or in the mountains, she had her classical drawing materials shipped ahead so she could immediately explore the visual possibilities of her new surroundings. Sun Valley, December-January 7 (1996-97) is a tour de force pastel that reveals her masterful handling of the medium and keen sensitivity to the topography and weather conditions that engaged her.
