It may seem like Spotted the spotted turtle and Oscar the painted turtle are enjoying a little fun in the sun, but it's actually mostly business! 🐢

Reptiles (like turtles) are cold-blooded, which means they use the heat from the sun to regulate their internal body temperature. Turtles may sunbathe for up to eight hours!

You can visit Oscar and Spotted in their habitats in Carolina Wildlife, or check out the wild turtles who call Explore the Wild: Wetland.

They’re back! We’re relaunching our Red Wolf t-shirt campaign due to popular demand and the arrival of our new litter! Check out our special summer colors and a new tank top option.

Did you know that the Red Wolf (Canis rufus) is now critically endangered, with fewer than 300 individuals under human care and in the wild combined? Your purchase can make a difference — 100% of the proceeds from t-shirt sales will directly support the next generation of Red Wolves at the Museum.

Here at the Museum of Life and Science, we have a constant commitment to animal conservation education and action. The Museum is proud to participate in species conservation initiatives, like the The Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) and Species Survival Plan (SSP) programs, to support our work with Red Wolves, radiated tortoises, and ring-tailed lemurs. These species are at risk of extinction, and they need our help now. 🧡

Be part of our work by donating today!

$5 provides daily produce for our radiated tortoises
$25 supplies a week of enrichment activities for our SAFE and SSP species
$50 provides our ring-tailed lemurs with chow for a month
$100 feeds our family of Red Wolves for a week

When we say the Red Wolf pups are growing fast, we mean it! They now weigh between 7.8 and 9.8 pounds apiece. 🐺

This stage of life is also their most playful and curious — come see them explore and develop! While we can't guarantee a schedule for the wolves' activity, the best time to visit is earlier in the morning and later in the afternoon.

Pupdate No. 4! The pups keep on growing and have entered their most playful stage of life. 🐺🧡

This most recent Pupdate details the skills needed to handle and examine young Red Wolf pups. Learn more about how our Animal Care Team works to protect this critically endangered species: bit.ly/3RzyOJ2

💡 Helpful tip: If you're planning to come by to see the pups while they're young, now's the time! Exploring and mischief are still their main activities, but it won't be long before they settle into doing "wolfier" activities.

As the Red Wolf pups continue to develop, so does their interest in both solid foods and play, often at the same time! This is about the period when a young wolf's diet transitions to a bit more like their parents — they're growing up so fast! 🐺🧡

Yesterday's vet rounds included an exciting new treatment plan for one of our oldest animals! 🐍

Dr. Tara Harrison performed electro-acupuncture on Finch the ball python. Program animal Finch is more than 30 years old and was diagnosed with spinal arthritis/spondylosis after an earlier CT scan showed significant arthritis from the base of her skull all the way down to her tail.

"This procedure is a method of pain management that we truly hope she responds positively to," Museum Veterinary Technician Laurel Walosin said.

And don't worry, the acupuncture needles are super tiny, so they aren't bothersome to critters. 🧡

The Museum of Life and Science is proud to announce that we have received a $2.3 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to establish a virtual Center of Excellence to support community science observations and data collection on extreme heat, aimed at protecting historically disadvantaged communities across the country through participatory science.

The Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring will be one of two National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) Centers of Excellence supported by $4.55 million through the Investing in America agenda.

We are sad to announce the passing of beloved Education Animal Team member Pepper the chinchilla, due to his advanced age. Born at the Museum on December 14, 2002, Pepper spent more than 21 years helping teach all ages about his species and the relationships between animals and humans.

The two decades we spent together were a gift, and Pepper is deeply missed. Please keep our Animal Care Team and programs staff in your hearts 🧡
