We've enjoyed partnering with The Carolina Theatre of Durham on the Retro Film Series! The sci-fi/fantasy/thriller films, which inspired Stranger Things and its characters, helped formulate the platform and themes for the "Stranger Times" exhibit. With your support, we can expand this year's educational and exhibit-related wellness programming to reach more schools and students. We're excited to focus on the contemporary aspects of the exhibit, relating to the pandemic and Durham teen experiences.

Over the coming months, we are featuring guest blog posts from community collaborators who help make this exhibit possible. Ashley Witherspoon, founder and CEO of Hand Made Dreams, will be working with the Museum to develop a series of free public programs for local students & families, beginning January 2024.

Last month, the MoDH celebrated its 10th anniversary of being the cherished storyteller and steward to help preserve Durham’s unique memories, lore, and heritage. Although many things have changed over the last decade (including the skyline!), the need for a space to learn and share the community’s history remains the same.

This holiday weekend, the Museum of Durham History will be giving thanks to have known and collaborated with a special person we tragically lost earlier this month, StoryHabitat founder Brad Larson.

If you have ever recorded a video on the Story Kiosk at an event, sat down to interview a loved one for an oral history in the Museum’s Story Room, or submitted a video through our website in the last several years, you have connected with the imagination and technological wizardry that was distinctly Brad’s.

He was a thoughtful, inquisitive storyteller who took great care to help museum professionals and amateur oral historians ask sincere questions to put folks at ease, and encourage them to open up and share.

Brad was always generous with his time and expertise, constantly working and improving his tech interfaces and user experience. Whenever people would marvel at the Story Kiosk concept, we were always excited to promote Brad’s vision and our pride to be associated with him.

The museum world lost a gentle friend, and we join our colleagues across the country in sharing our gratitude for his life and many contributions.

View Brad Larson's obituary, send flowers and sign the guestbook.

Big shout out to the New York Times for featuring our Dur'm in the article "36 Hours in Durham, North Carolina"! Read the article: nytimes.com
🗞️and an extra special mention to Mitch Tuchman who mentioned us in the comments section: "Be sure to stop in at the Museum of Durham History at 500 West Main Street. Along with the permanent "Durham Beginnings" exhibition, the current installation is "Stranger Times," an innovative meditation on the disruption of teen lives and education brought on by COVID."
🤞Fingers crossed we make the list next time the NYT comes back to the Bull City?
