It’s hard to believe our Model Train Show was already two weeks ago!

Thank you to everyone who came out, supported our vendors, and helped support the depot. We welcomed over 450 visitors that day!

A special thank-you to our vendors as well. To our returning vendors, we truly appreciate your continued support and partnership. To those who joined us for the first time this year, thank you for taking a chance on our show!

It was a wonderful day spent with so many members of our train community. We feel incredibly lucky to host events like this and to collaborate with such a great group of people.

Today’s featured depot is the Grand Trunk station in Ola 🚂

Ola, located in Gratiot County, was settled about 1887. The settlement emerged around the same time the railroad came through. At one point, Ola had a depot, post office, blacksmith, general store and cheese factory.

The Ola depot sat along the Toledo, Saginaw and & Muskegon railroad. Later, the Grand Trunk would acquire this line which ran from Ashley to Muskegon.

Unfortunately, a photo of the Ola depot is proving difficult to find. The photo here is of either a small section house or freight house at Ola.

Norma Ward didn’t just believe in saving Durand Union Station. She was instrumental in making it happen.

At a time when the depot’s future was uncertain and the threat of demolition was very real, Norma stepped forward with fierce determination. She simply wouldn’t accept losing the depot. She worked tirelessly behind the scenes and out in the community - organizing, fundraising, writing letters, attending meetings, and pushing for answers when no one else could get them.

She corresponded directly with state officials, reached out to Congress and the Michigan House of Representatives for funding, and worked closely with organizations like MARP, all to ensure the depot would continue to serve a purpose. Thanks in part to her persistence, Durand didn’t end up with just a small Amtrak shelter. Instead, Durand kept its depot, and its history.

In those early days of restoration, when even basic lighting was missing, Norma and others would come down twice a day, using their car headlights to illuminate the platform for passengers arriving on the Amtrak train. That’s the kind of dedication she had - not just in words, but in action.

Norma Ward didn’t just help preserve a building. She protected a piece of Durand’s identity. Her passion, grit, collaboration with others, and refusal to give up are some of the reasons our historic depot still stands today.

During World War I, the rails became a crucial lifeline in America - moving troops, supplies, and industry at a pace never seen before. In Michigan, railroads carried everything from copper and timber to troops and manufactured goods, helping fuel the war effort from the home front to the front lines.

The war may have been fought over seas, but it was the rails that carried America there.

Today’s featured depot is the Grand Trunk station in Burt 🚂

Burt, located in Saginaw County, was settled about 1889. The station sat along the Cincinnati, Saginaw & Mackinaw Railroad. This line would later become part of the Grand Trunk Western.

By November of 1926, rail travel had slowed enough that Grand Trunk requested to suspend agency service at Burt.

It does not appear that this depot exists any longer.

For the first time since 1951, the 1225 (The Polar Express), returned to its former home in Saginaw for a visit.

The historic Pere Marquette 1225 was shuttled by a Huron and Eastern locomotive as it came through Durand on its way to Saginaw. Seeing steam drifting through the air past Durand Union Station was an incredible site to see. Truly a blast from the past!

The excursion does not appear to have been widely publicized, but the site of it in Durand will be a lasting memory for those lucky enough to catch it.

Always amazing when unexpected rail history rolls right through town! 🚂

Did you know… Durand's beautiful depot is reportedly one of the most photographed in the United States? 🚂

Thanks to its unusual Chateau Romanesque design, it’s become a favorite subject for photographers.
