Window on the Plains Museum

Window on the Plains is a "big city" museum in a small town. We are preserving the past through history and art.

Window on the Plains Museum began in 1976 as Moore County Historical Museum. The facility was housed in the ballroom of a landmark hotel until 2001, when it was moved to its permanent home and became Window on the Plains Museum. In addition to extensive displays centered around farming and ranching, industry, business, family life and wildlife, the museum houses a research and archives center. The

museum also includes a walking trail that winds among outside exhibits of farming, ranching and industrial exhibits. The Art Center opened a new building in October of 2001 as a neighbor to Window on the Plains. The joining of the two has made Dumas a pleasant stop to view art and history and to enjoy the best of Texas.

We're happy to welcome "Old Mack" to our museum collection!

This 1972 Mack fire truck served as the McKee refinery’s primary fire truck for more than a decade. It continued serving in the fleet for nearly 30 years, including responding to the major refinery fire in 2007. After being repaired from damage sustained in that fire, it returned to service and eventually became a reserve truck before retiring in 2024.

For 31 years, Old Mack played an important role in protecting the McKee Refinery and its employees. We’re proud to preserve this piece of local history and appreciate the Valero team for donating it to the museum.

Did you know that since opening our doors in 1976, our museum has welcomed visitors from all 50 states and 52 countries worldwide? Some are just traveling through, while others make a special trip just to see us.

But almost every week, we greet local residents who tell us, "This is my first visit!"

If you live in Moore County and haven't been to the museum yet, what are you waiting for? Come and see what visitors from around the world have discovered right here at home!

On July 29, 1956, Moore County experienced one of the darkest days in its history. A fire at the Shamrock Oil & Gas tank farm erupted into a series of devastating explosions that claimed the lives of 19 men (volunteer firefighters from Dumas and Sunray and Shamrock employees) and injured many others. Their courage and sacrifice remain an important part of our community's history.

We are honored to preserve their story through a permanent exhibit featuring photographs, artifacts, and historical accounts that commemorate the men who gave their lives and the lasting impact of this tragedy.

A memorial service will be held this evening at 8:00 p.m. at the Sunray City Hall to honor these men and their families. We hope you'll take a moment today to remember their sacrifice and the enduring legacy they left our community.

A big thank you to the Borger Satellite Center for bringing a fun group to visit the museum today! We had a great time introducing everyone to Maximillian the Horned Toad and exploring the museum together. We hope to see you again soon!

We're excited to welcome a rare piece of automotive history to our museum collection -- a beautifully restored 1929 Willys Knight Model 56, generously donated by Jerelene Waters.

Restored by her late husband, Warren Waters, this remarkable automobile retains many of its original components. Warren and Jerelene enjoyed taking the Willys for drives around town and stopping for ice cream, where it never failed to draw a crowd.

Produced for only two years (1928–1929), the Willys Knight Model 56 is a rare and distinctive vehicle that remains highly prized by collectors today. We're honored to preserve this special automobile and the memories that come with it for future generations.

Come see this new addition on display in our second barn!
