Lake Superior Railroad Museum The Lake Superior Railroad Museum offers one of the richest historic experiences in railroading
(540)

Housed in Duluth, Minnesota's Historic Union Depot, the Lake Superior Railroad Museum works in conjunction with the North Shore Scenic Railroad to offer one of the richest historic experiences in railroading available anywhere. The beautiful French Chateauesque building was completed in 1892 and was a bustling hub of activity for much of the 20th century. In 1910, seven railroads dispatched over 5

0 trains a day from Duluth. An Immigrants' waiting room served as a small Ellis Island for the region's newest arrivals to await their connections. During times of war, regiments of soldiers would march down Superior Street to board trains for service. The last train pulled out of the station in 1969, and in 1973 work began to restore the Depot and create the museum. Since then, and with the help of thousands of enormously talented and dedicated volunteers, we have been striving to preserve and enrich this historic environment as the zenith of an era past, frozen in time. Along with the trains on display inside the museum is Depot Square, a 3/4 scale recreation Duluth's downtown in 1910. It is claimed that this area had more millionaires per capita than any state in the nation at the turn of the century. Our collection of railroad equipment is the finest in the midwest, featuring steam, diesel and electric locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, dining cars and specialty equipment used by logging and mining industries. Many of our exhibits are hands-on, we even have a genuine, 1990s-era locomotive simulator where you can be the engineer. As a part of our effort to preserve history, we maintain an active library of books, publications, maps and photos. We're also proud to offer a variety of educational programs adaptable to all grade levels, including outreach programs and kits for loan to educators.

Our Spotlight today at Spencer’s American 250 Locomotive Celebration. Truly humbling the outpouring of love for this locomotive and what we do as a museum for historic preservation. Something we wouldn’t be able to do without our volunteers, members, community partners and our dedicated staff.

The Northern Pacific's first steam locomotive, "Minnetonka".
It was purchased by NP in July 1870.
Weighs 24,000 pounds
Is 27 feet and 6 inches long.
This locomotive is on loan to us by the BNSF.
In this picture, the engine is pretty clean and shiny. Is this photo from 1933 before it went to the Chicago Century of Progress?

Day 2 in Spencer at “America 250 Locomotive Celebration”
Our LSRX 250 an EMD GP9 has been a popular engine. We couldn’t have made it here without the power of our volunteers who put over 400 hours into the engine.

Back in 2014, the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer hosted "Streamliners at Spencer," and our very own Soo Line 2500 joined the others for a 4-day celebration of streamliner locomotives. Here, our locomotive is taking a turn on the turntable.
Today our staff is headed to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, again this time for the "America 250 Locomotive Celebration," where our GP9, which is painted to celebrate the country's 250th birthday, will be on display with many other locomotives. Stay tuned as we share pictures from the event!

This picture is from a photo album title “Veterans of 30 years D&IR”, donated in 1984 by Don Shank. The picture is of the Veteran Employee parade Tower Minn, Aug 1916. This picture celebrates the “Driver with mule who laid the 1st rail Aug 1883.” Not really a picture you expect to see when you open a railroad photo album!

We have had the Seacrest O scale model
layout in storage for way too long! We now have a place for it in the St. Louis County Depot and we have a plan. We are in the process of preparing contracts to bring on some incredibly talented professionals. Stay tuned!
To start building some excitement, a group of volunteers brought the section of downtown Virginia MN to display in the museum. Come and see it!

This is an amazing picture of the first train of the Duluth, Virgina and Rainy Lake Railway crossing the Rainy Lake bridge at Rainer, April 28, 1908. The construction of the railroad began in 1901 and ran from Virginia, MN, to Winnipeg. Which railroad historian can help us out with why Duluth is in the name?
