From earth, a life.

c. 1850 — a 7-gallon stoneware storage jar, made with alkaline glaze by Dave, the enslaved potter, artist, and poet of Pottersville, South Carolina.

To most, it was dirt beneath their feet. To Dave, it was clay — something he could shape, fire, and sometimes write upon.

He wrestled nearly 60 pounds of clay on his wheel to create vessels like this—made for the necessities of daily life yet sometimes transformed into a place for Dave to leave his own words behind.

Nearly 200 years later, his work still speaks.

Clayton, "Peg Leg" Bates was born in Fountain Inn, South Carolina in 1907. After losing a leg in a childhood accident, he refused to let it end his passion for dance, transforming his adversity into extraordinary talent. Performing with a handcrafted wooden peg leg, Bates became one of America's most celebrated and legendary tap dancers.

Our "Of Beauty & Backbone" exhibit showcases more than art and poetry—it tells stories of history, resilience, and identity through our curated pieces. Visit Bowie Arts Center to experience these thoughtful works and discover the reflections they inspire.
