One of the most significant artifacts now on display in the Summerville Museum's Antebellum Room is an original slave tag discovered in the heart of the Original Village in historic downtown Summerville. Dated 1858 and bearing the number 1800, the tag is marked "Servant," identifying the enslaved individual's permitted occupation under Charleston's slave badge system.

These tags served as a means of regulating and controlling the labor of enslaved people who were hired out to work in various trades and domestic roles. The discovery of this tag in Summerville provides a tangible connection to a difficult but important chapter of local history and offers insight into the lives of those whose stories are often absent from the historical record.

The Summerville Museum is grateful to Joshua and Erica Phillips and Christopher Cromes for generously loaning this remarkable artifact for public display. Visitors can view the tag as part of the museum's Antebellum Room exhibit, where it serves as a powerful reminder of the complex history that shaped our community.

The museum is open Thursday-Sunday 10am-4pm to view the tag and many other artifacts on display!
