🦴 Honoring the Donors Who Preserve Our Past 🦈
Mace Brown Museum of Natural History × Palmetto Paleontology Museum

The preservation of South Carolina’s incredible fossil record is only possible because of the generosity and support of dedicated donors and supporters.

At the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History and the Palmetto Paleontology Museum, donors play a vital role in protecting fossils, supporting research, and making paleontology accessible to the public. From Megalodon teeth and ancient whales to the stories they tell about our coastal past, these collections exist because people chose to give back to science and education.

Every contribution—whether through fossil donations, financial support, or advocacy—helps ensure that future generations can learn from, study, and be inspired by the natural history beneath our feet.

We are proud to stand alongside institutions like the Mace Brown Museum in celebrating the donors who make preservation, education, and discovery possible.

🦴 Thank you for investing in the past to educate the future.

📍 Dorchester County Fossils – Did You Know?

Right here in Dorchester County, South Carolina, we uncover fossils that tell a story between 22–32 million years old!

These discoveries reveal what lived in our ancient oceans long before the modern coastline existed.

✨ Local Fossil Facts:

• Angustiden Teeth – These are the grandfather to the Megalodon, living between 18–28 million years ago. Their teeth show traits that later evolved into the massive Megalodon lineage.

• Megalodon Teeth – Descendants of Angustiden. Megalodon became one of the most powerful predators to ever live in our oceans.

• Whale Bones & Vertebrae – Early marine mammals that lived alongside prehistoric sharks in warm coastal waters.

• Fossilized Shells & Marine Life – Proof that Dorchester County was once submerged as an ancient marine environment.

Hey everyone!! Sooo we did a thing yesterday! Founder Skye Renee Basak and husband Joshua Basak located a 40 million year old Basilosaurid whale! Today the PPM team returned to the scene to work on uncovering the discovery and making it ready for extraction! By end of day, we had found the animal to be stretched over at least a 25 foot area with the bones being 3 dimensional as they were in life! Tomorrow, we will be returning to continue working on freeing this animal and then will be faced with getting it back to the lab for prep! In order to complete this mission, the PPM team is in need of funds so we can purchase tools (including a demolition hammer, sawzall blades, etc.) and we may even have to rent a trailer to transport the jackets! If you would like to contribute to the cause of saving and preserving this animal for research, you can do so by making a donation to one of the options below!
