On day 7 of Heritage Breed Week, we remember who came before.
Percheron Draft Horse
Percheron Draft Horses originated from the Perche region of France. They are descended from great war horses in the middle ages. Percherons are considered to be one of the largest breeds of horses. They average around 16 to 17 hands but can range 15 to 19 hands or larger. They can weigh from 1,900 to 2,600 pounds. Black and grey are the most common coat colors, but they also can be bay, chestnut, or roan. Percherons are powerful with heavy muscleing but are elegant in their heads and have graceful movement. Their elegance and graceful movement comes from a mix of Arabian Horse Blood from their past ancestors. They are known to have a gentle temperament. Percherons can do many disciplines from farm work, plowing, pulling a wagon, carriage driving, and/or riding.
