Stroll into Ox-Bow House for “Becoming,” an exhibition of new works by Steven Meier.

Opening Reception:
Saturday, April 11, 2026
1:00–5:00 p.m.

In this new body of work, Meier deploys ambiguous shapes, colors, and gestures as a palette for creating chimerical figurative abstractions. Rooted in processes of deconstruction and re-assembly, the exhibition mirrors Ox-Bow’s commitment to experimentation, material exploration, and the evolving language of contemporary art.

Meier is a multi-disciplinary artist working between Chicago and Gary, IN, and has been part of the Ox-Bow community since 1989 and since 2019 has served as Ox-Bow’s Board President. The exhibition opening reception is in conjunction with the Second Saturday Gallery Stroll in downtown Douglas, Michigan.

It's time for us to announce a bittersweet changing of the guard. Our beloved Manager of Ox-Bow House, Maggie Bandstra, has decided to step away from her position to focus more on her studio practice. Although we're thrilled to see Maggie step closer to her art, we will miss her dearly. Maggie has seen Ox-Bow House through its infancy stages (remember those horrible yellow walls??), and into the community fixture that it is today. Almost everything retail and gallery at Ox-Bow has Maggie's fingerprints all over it: The on-campus Tuck Shop that services our students every summer, the monthly Featured Artist Exhibitions that highlight artists near and far, partnerships with suppliers like Beam and Golden Paints that have turned Ox-Bow House into a much-needed supply stop for local artists. Countless new faces have joined the Ox-Bow community through workshops, events, retreat experiences, and personal connections to our artists' work because they happened to stumble into our gallery and connect with Maggie first.

Stepping into the role of Retail & Programming Manager at Ox-Bow House is Candice Whitfield. Having spent the last 10 months as our resident Ox-Bow House Assistant, we couldn't be more confident in the capable hands that now shepherd our beloved Douglas gallery. Candice has been a warm presence in our gallery from the beginning, and is already hard at work bringing fresh ideas to the House. Most importantly, we know she will continue celebrating and advocating for our artists in true Ox-Bow style.

Please join us in thanking Maggie for her 3 years of tremendous service to our community! And don't forget to stop by Ox-Bow House soon to say hi to Candice and hear what they have dreaming up for our favorite local gallery.

It's beginning to look a lot like Winter Market at Ox-Bow House!
Stop by our gallery in Douglas for the grand opening Saturday, November 8 to get first looks at what's new, shop seasonal work from our artists, and pick up a few of our classic giftable ox-goods. Saturday's market will also include live music and an array of refreshments–the prime shopping experience!

Did you know? Purchasing goods from the Winter Artist Market means more than just acquiring thoughtfully crafted art and products. It also means you’re supporting artists and investing in arts education! What’s better than that?

[house emoji] Ox-Bow House Artist Highlight! Mary Sundstrom, a West Michigan artist, is deeply influenced by the natural beauty of her region. The organic metalwork of Sundstrom's statement jewelry has been a staple at Ox-Bow House since 2022.

As a naturalist, Mary Sundstrom draws inspiration from the creatures, botanicals, and minerals found in the bayous and along the shorelines of the Great Lakes. Her artwork, often playful, translates the natural world she observes into vibrant paintings. When she's not at the easel or exploring the woods for mushrooms, Mary also creates unique jewelry pieces and sculptures. She previously served for many years as the Exhibitions Director at the Holland Area Arts Council before deciding to dedicate herself to art full-time. Stop by Ox-Bow House in Douglas to see Mary's latest creations.
