Today in Ford County History!
On the night of January 6, 1886, the second of two disastrous blizzards rung in a disastrous New Year over much of the western plains. Although the earlier blizzard that lasted from Jan 1-3 had brought more snow and higher winds, the storm of Jan 6 was like disaster piled on top of catastrophe and proved cleanup and digging out next to impossible for some time. According the National Weather Service and the Dodge City Signal Station (then located atop the old Dodge House Hotel), the arctic blast of Jan 6 caused temperatures down to -16 degrees for several days. Cattle loaded on trains froze to death in the rail cars. Livestock froze by the thousands and estimates of at least 75% of the cattle in western Kansas died.
