One of the biggest items in the collection is this 1883 Mosler & Bahmann & Co. safe that was owned by the Kirkpatrick and Dunn Furniture Store. Mosler & Bahmann & Co. was founded in 1867 by Gustave Mosler in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1891, the company outgrew its original location and moved to Hamilton, Ohio, part of the Cincinnati metro area. They became one of the major suppliers of safes to the United States Government. The company remained in business until 2001.

In October 1884, Ed Kirkpatrick bought Charles Dickinson’s store located four doors west of First Avenue on Front Street. He partnered with F. W. Dunn to form Kirkpatrick and Dunn. The store sold carpets, furniture, and undertaking supplies while also selling organs, pianos, and sewing machines. A fire on November 27, 1885 destroyed the 200 block of Front Street including Kirkpatrick and Dunn’s store. A new brick building was built on Front Street to house their store and the York, Parker & Draper Mercantile Company with both stores moving in in early October 1886. Around 1900, Ed Kirkpatrick moved to Arkansas City, Kansas where he operated a furniture store until his death on October 3, 1920. The safe was donated to Boot Hill Museum by Ronald Kirkpatrick in 1980.
