Pennsylvania's Northern York County Historical and Preservation Society. We operate Dills Tavern and Maple Shade Barn.

The Northern York County Historical and Preservation Society (NYCHAPS) was formed in 1984 to promote and encourage the study, collection and preservation of any or all aspects of the historical and cultural heritage of the area included within the Northern York County School District. Owned and operated by NYCHAPS, Dill's Tavern is a spectacular 18th Century National Historic Landmark. Along with the surrounding Plantation and outbuildings, it has been rehabilitated as an educational facility and historic venue. Events and activities are held to increase understanding of local history and to promote general interest and culture within the community.

Have you ever heard of the “Burgoyne Surrounded” quilt pattern? There’s a piece of American history behind the name.

The traditional patchwork design was named for British General John Burgoyne’s surrender after the Battles of Saratoga in 1777. Now, a special queen-sized Burgoyne Surrounded quilt is being auctioned to benefit NYCHAPS.

You can see the quilt for yourself during Farmers Market Saturdays and Sunday tours at Dill’s Tavern, then submit a confidential bid anytime through November 8.

Love local history? Here’s another way to experience it right here in our community!

Our friends at Wellsville Frontier Days, Inc. are celebrating their 65th anniversary with a Heritage Parade on Saturday, October 3, and they’ve invited the NYCHAPS community to be part of it.

Beginning at noon, the parade will celebrate the spirit of the Western Frontier with horses and riders, wagons, carriages, tractors, antique fire engines, themed floats and more.

Want to do more than watch? The public is invited to participate, too! Individuals and groups can enter, and there’s no entry fee. Pre-registration is required, so check out the flyer and their website for all the details.

The parade begins at the Frontier Days grounds at 1621 Lisburn Rd. in Wellsville and travels along Main Street.

Congratulations to Wellsville Frontier Days on 65 years of bringing history and community together.

Ever wonder what’s happening over in the Eichelberger Distillery during First Friday? 🥃

Tavernkeeper Murray Small will be there offering a special tasting program for anyone who wants to add another experience to their evening at Dill’s Tavern. It’s a chance to step inside the distillery, spend some time with Murray, and enjoy a tasting while you’re here.

The tasting is an additional $10, and seats can be reserved in advance, so if this sounds like your kind of First Friday, be sure to save your spot!

First Friday returns next Friday, October 2, starting at 7 PM at Dill’s Tavern. We’ll see you there!

Students from Wellsville Elementary recently prepared a living history program honoring Revolutionary War patriots buried in the Quaker Meeting House Cemetery. On August 29, they were presented with commemorative plaques by Rich Conley and SAR representatives John Kelly and Dale Leopard.

And an especially memorable part? Some of the students were able to find “their person” on our Revolutionary War Patriots display!

We loved seeing these young historians dig into the stories of people who were part of our community nearly 250 years ago. Thank you to everyone who helped make this experience possible!

A little taste of history for your fall. 🍒🥃

This recipe for Martha Washington’s “Excellent Cherry Bounce” calls for Morello cherry juice, brandy, sugar and warming spices like cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg, then lets the mixture stand for a month or six weeks before bottling.

It’s a fascinating glimpse at the recipes and flavors enjoyed centuries ago, and perhaps a little inspiration for your own fall kitchen.
