Some of Northern York County’s Revolutionary War history is still standing right in our local cemeteries, and on May 23, the community is invited to help preserve it!

Join NYCHAPS for a Tombstone Preservation Workshop at Dillsburg Cemetery from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, where participants will observe and learn proper techniques for repairing and cleaning historic gravestones, including tombstones belonging to Revolutionary War soldiers.

Among the soldiers buried there are Thomas Campbell and Archibald Campbell, two local Patriots whose stories played a role in America’s fight for independence.

Thomas Campbell marched with the 1st Pennsylvania Rifles after Lexington and Concord, survived wounds at Germantown after being shot through the wrist and torso, returned to service, and later witnessed Cornwallis’s surrender at Yorktown. His brother Archibald Campbell fought at Brandywine and later died from wounds and exposure connected to his service.

This free public workshop is part of our America250 initiatives and offers a unique opportunity to connect with local history in a hands-on way.

This spring, local 4th-grade students are helping bring Northern York County’s Revolutionary War history to life in a powerful way.

As part of the America250 celebration, students have spent weeks researching real Patriots buried right here in our local cemeteries. Now, they’ll portray those individuals at their gravesites and share the stories of the men who helped shape our country.

One student researching Mathias Hollopeter even tracked down the Patriot’s original home, sparking incredible excitement and curiosity in the classroom along the way.

These students have put so much heart into this project, and we would love to see our community come out to support them.

Upcoming events include:
🇺🇸 Tombstone Preservation Workshop — May 23
🇺🇸 Living History at the Quaker Meeting House — May 23
🇺🇸 Living History at the Dillsburg Cemetery — May 31
