Appalachian Women's Museum

Appalachian Women's Museum We are an all volunteer organization. We currently open on Saturdays and for special events and tours.

We are a cultural heritage site in Dillsboro, NC dedicated to collecting, preserving and sharing the stories of Southern Appalachian Women past, present and future. We have been renovating the Monteith Farmstead to become the first 'live' museum dedicated to the history of the women of Southern Appalachia. When fully opened, we will be a cultural arts venue where visitors will experience live demo

nstrations of mountain life in this 1900 farmstead, along with rooms dedicated to women who helped shape the lives of generations to come. In addition to famous mountain women in history, we will feature stories about ordinary women, leading extraordinary lives! The artifact of the week is this 18-inch-long doll created by Verna Mae, an Appalachian woman who worked for several years at the Hindman Settlement School in Kentucky. The doll is a lookalike of herself, featuring her signature long gray braid. The second picture from the 1980s features Mae displaying her quilts. Come by the museum to see the doll and learn about other amazing Appalachian women!

Introducing our first artifact of the week, the Edison Phonograph! It is one of our latest exhibits at the AWM and is displayed in our music room.

The Edison Phonograph, created by Thomas Edison in the late nineteenth century, revolutionized music and made music available for families to enjoy from the comfort of their homes.

Come by the AWM on Saturdays from 10-2 to listen to records from this century-old machine!

It looks like the rain should clear by the start of Airing of the Quilts this Saturday. No worries if it is still sprinkling the quilts will be hung inside. Laura Nelle Goebel will be demonstrating under the cover of the canning house.

Airing of the Quilts May 2nd from 11 - 3 pm
Join us to celebrate the tradition of hanging quilts out to air after the long winter months at this year's Airing of the Quilts on May 2nd from 11 - 3 pm. This year's event includes a special exhibit and hand quilting demonstration by Laura Nelle Goebel, a quilt show and museum tours.
