Detroit Lakes Poetry Walk The DL Poetry Walk is a grassroots public art project that displays original poems in our cute town.

Polar Fest 2022 was our inaugural ‘Polartry Poetry Walk’, and Summer 2022 was our first 'Flowerpot Poetry Walk' - and they were a lovely addition to our public spaces. We hope to continue and potentially expand the two seasonal poetry walks as a way to inspire, celebrate, and promote poets of all ages, while also providing outdoor public art to encourage people to get out and make the most of both

winter and summer in our beautiful community in Minnesota. Full disclosure: We have plans to have a year-round Detroit Lakes Poetry Walk as a public art installation in the near future. But we decided, rather than wait for all the working pieces of that project to come together, we would launch the ‘Polartry Poetry Walk’ and 'Flowerpot Poetry Walk' as temporary public art installations and a fun way to introduce the concept and build excitement for public poetry in the community.

What did you do today? Well, we planted a poetry walk today! (And it is BEAUTIFUL! 😍) That means the 2026 Flowerpot Poetry Walk in Detroit Lakes is officially OPEN! (Map is coming - but meanwhile - take a walk along Washington Ave from Grant St to the City Park & Veteran's Parkway & McKinley Plaza and you'll find 44 giant flowerpots adorned with poetry.) 🫶

Sorry for the CMYK pun-crostic poem (unless you're a fan of nerdy graphics printing poetry humor - in which case, you're welcome!) We're excited to report the poetry walk file has been sent to Trophy House and they said it looks good to print! 🤩 Now we all need to ask the ink and tech gods to look favorably upon our project - with a little finger-crossing, too. 🤞But we're getting close to planting poems next week! 😍

The Flowerpot Fairies — aka Bergen's Greenhouses and Downtown Alive — did their magic (plus plenty of back muscle!) to beautify our downtown! Here's our final updated map of poetry submissions - with poets from 3 countries and 16 US states represented! (Nebraska was the only "inner" state to get filled in!) We are grateful for the GIFT all the poets have shared with us, and can't wait to see which poems are selected to share with our community this summer. (Poets, we'll be emailing everyone the first week of June with results - so in the meantime, RELAX and enjoy the beginning of a beautiful summer!) 🌞😎😍

A heartfelt 🥰 THANK YOU and GOOD LUCK 🍀 to all the poets who shared their words with us! We had just shy of 200 poems submitted and we're excited to read them! In early June, we'll email all the poets with selection news — then a quick sprint of proofing and printing — and we'll be planting poems by Summer Solstice! ☀️ But stay tuned, we'll be posting fun updates and tidbits here leading up to our announcement of The 2026 Flowerpot Poets! 🌸
