Morgan Stuedemann ,a sophomore graphic design major, produced "Thoughts and Dreams" in order to "reflect my head being in the clouds often. I chose to use semi-recognizable imagery like a flying pig or a train of thought, to convey the idea that the figure sitting on the hill is lost in thought or day dreaming as I often do."

Morgan's background in the arts started when she was " really young and spending time with my Grandma, who enjoyed painting, and we would hang out in her basement and paint. From that point on I enjoyed exploring various art mediums both on my own and in classes."

Come see "Thoughts and Dreams" along with 60+ additional great pieces of student artwork at the 47th Annual Juried Student Exhibition - open through Sunday, April 22!

Celine Lie produced "Flag of Me" for a 2D design class. The flag represents "me and my background," said Celine. "The symbols represent different values that I live by. The colors are meant to mimic the Indonesian flag, where my family is from. And I dyed the fabric using batik dye to further represent Indonesia, where the technique originated."

Come see "Flag of Me" along with 60+ additional great pieces of student artwork at the 47th Annual Juried Student Exhibition - open through Sunday, April 22!

Cassie Bauer, a senior Digital Media Production major and Graphic Design minor, produced the piece "Layers" in a Drawing I class. "The requirements of the piece were to choose a yucca plant and find a part of it that would be interesting to draw. The process we were required to draw one shape at a time and draw every detail of that shape before continuing on to another shape. So the process was very tedious, and my technique changed shape by shape as I drew. In the end, I feel as though you can view the piece in many ways."

Cassie says that she loves "drawing, creating my own characters, and telling stories. I feel like all of that comes hand in hand with being a great artist." Cassie, we agree!

Come see "Layers" along with 60+ additional great pieces of student artwork at the 47th Annual Juried Student Exhibition - open through Sunday, April 22!

"Unbought and Unbossed" was created by Olivia Hockey while she and her graphic design class were curating a poster show for Women's History Month at Cowles Library. Creating the print gave Olivia the chance to learn both about screen printing and Shirley Chisolm - two topics that were new to her.

Olivia is a senior BFA Painting BA Graphic Design double major with an advertising minor from Des Moines. Come see "Unbought and Unbossed" along with 60+ additional great pieces of student artwork at the 47th Annual Juried Student Exhibition - open through Sunday, April 22!

Madeline Cheek produced the piece "Sara x 64" as “part of an assignment in my Intermediate Drawing class with Dawn Gettler. “. The prompt challenged the students to use different materials, or at least application of materials, in each of the 64 squares that make up the final drawing. Maddie says that she was "inspired to explore various mark-making strategies in order to represent the likeness of my classmate, Sara Jensen...I enjoyed the challenge because it pushed me to scavenge for unconventional drawing materials, such as tea, ice melt, cinnamon, and mascara."

Maddie is currently a Junior majoring in Anthropology/ Sociology and Writing with minors in Drawing and Spanish and a concentration in Global and Comparative Public Health. Maddie says that she decided to minor in Drawing "in order to continue learning and improving, but mostly just so that I would be reminded to keep creating."

Come see "Sara x 64" along with 60+ additional great pieces of student artwork at the 47th Annual Juried Student Exhibition - open through Sunday, April 22!

Clio Cullison made “untitled noodle print” when she was working at a ramen restaurant and was inspired by the "collaborative effort that goes into both making and eating a bowl of soup." Clio's been been passionate about art for "what feels like forever" and has been making prints since high school. Clio is originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota and is currently a senior Printmaking and Rhetoric, Media & Social Change major.

"The Apennine Colossus" was made by Drake University student Erin Opar in reference to a sculpture near Florence, Italy with the same name. Says Erin, "I was drawn to the natural texture of the rock and wanted to incorporate that into my painting. I wanted to give the sculpture a more lively and animated spirit, and make it seem like the painting was of a person, rather than sculpted rocks."

Erin is currently working toward a B.A. in both English and Drawing. Come see "The Apennine Colossus" and 60+ other great students artworks at the 47th Annual Juried Student Exhibition - open through Sunday, April 22!

Hannah Hawbaker, a non-traditional Junior Drawing major, is pursuing her second college degree after earning a Theatre Arts BA from Grand View University.

Hannah made "Heirloom II" as an example of how a house is a living structure. Hannah said that "focusing on the details that made each room special, the viewer can draw conclusions of who could be living in this space." She did studies of her childhood doll house in preparation of the piece.

Come see "Heirloom II" as well as dozens of other great pieces of student artworks at the 47th Annual Juried Student Exhibition. Open through Sunday, April 22!

Sara Jensen, a Junior Graphic Design major (BFA) from Brighton, Michigan, created "Bike to the Moon and Back" for this years DSM Pedal Art Show.

"I wanted to incorporate a game my housemates and I play, where one draws something with their eyes closed on a whiteboard and the others guess what it is. The bike was an eyes closed illustration of mine. My design was created in Adobe Illustrator as a 1 color layer. Then it was sent to The Garage where it was made into a silkscreen. I purposefully offset the silkscreen on my second press to get a layered effect with the deep purple overlaying the gold ink."

Come see Sara's "Bike to the Moon and Back" and dozens of other great pieces at the 47th Annual Juried Student Exhibition - open through Sunday, April 22!

Monica Donham, from Johnston, Iowa, created "Figure #2" after taking a J-Term figure drawing class with Prof. Greg Fuqua. "The subject matter really resonated with me," Monica said. "It inspired a continued exploration of the human form in my paintings. This painting started with a simple polaroid picture which I then used as a point of reference when translating the form onto canvas."

Monica just earned her teaching license and is searching for the perfect art teacher position and classroom of her own.

See "Figure #2" and so many more great pieces at the 47th Annual Juried Student Exhibition opening Sunday, March 25 from 1-3pm!

Margaret Clapham, a Senior majoring in Chemistry, made "Sun and Moon" in a 2D design course for non-majors. Margaret loves Celtic inspired art because she enjoys math and "they often incorporate a lot of geometry, symmetry, and patterns". "This is my favorite piece I've ever made so I figured why not submit it in my last semester?"

Nicole Prancik, a Sophomore majoring in Studio Art, created Sound of the Night to show "a visual representation of all the curious different noises you hear during the night. The repetition in the piece is associated with the calming feeling I get while listening to these different noises." Nicole has been creating art ever since she "could pick up a pencil and start drawing."

See Sound of the Night and so many more great pieces at the 47th Annual Juried Student Exhibition opening Sunday, March 25!
