You just never know what you're going to see out the Wallace House windows in Sherman Hill. On Tuesday a crew removed the corner telephone pole to provide more room for winter snow removal. The pole was smokin' from the saw, but it was all done very safely. Now it's our turn to beautify that corner with some perennials for everybody to enjoy.

Happy 132nd birthday, Henry A. Wallace! Born in Adair County, Iowa in 1888, Wallace was editor of Wallaces' Farmer magazine, founder of Pioneer Hi-Bred, U.S. Vice President, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, and U.S. Secretary of Commerce. He was named "most influential Iowan of the 20th century" by the Des Moines Register in 1999. Want to learn more? Roman is starting with direct-to-consumer dumpling orders but with future plans of an occasional Ukrainian dinner pop-ups. Filled dumplings are all hand crafted and pick-up at the Mickle Center on Saturday mornings. Both savory and sweet varieties available! Welcome!

Paxton Williams portrays George Washington Carver in "Listening to the Still, Small Voice"--a reflection of Carver's life and work, including his friendship with the Wallace family. WCI includes two properties on the National Register of Historic Places. The Wallace House in Des Moines is the home of "Uncle Henry" Wallace, the first editor of Wallaces' Farmer magazine. The Country Life Center in Orient is the birthplace farm of Henry A. Wallace, U.S. Vice President, Secretary of Agriculture, and Secretary of Commerce during the Roosevelt administration.
