Iowa native Henry A. Wallace died of Lou Gehrig's disease on this date in 1965. Political cartoonist Frank Miller drew this remembrance for the front page of the Des Moines Register. He inscribed the original to Henry A.'s brother Jim, and it now hangs at the Wallace House in Des Moines, home of their grandparents Nancy and Henry. The Register later named Henry A. as "the most influential Iowan of the 20th century". He served the nation as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, U.S. Vice President, editor of Wallaces' Farmer and founder of Pioneer Hi-Bred.

You know what they say, "It always looks worse before it looks better"! I think we're in that stage of renovation on the house at the County Life Center. Progress is being made, however. House is now wrapped and windows are starting to be replaced. It will look better soon! Stay tuned for more pics!

The wait is over! Oishii Ramen will have their first pop-up this Saturday at the Mickle Center Shared-Use Commercial Kitchen.

Louis and his crew will be in the Kitchen all day this Friday making his signature, scratch broth for their traditional Japanese Ramen dishes. Check out their website for the menu and how to order. Select your favorites for this pre-order, curbside to go event! Personally, I can wait to try the Aka Tonkotsu.

Campaigning is over; it's time to vote! The presidential campaign trail has a long history in Iowa as evidenced by this 1936 photo of Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Sec. of Agriculture (and Adair County native) Henry A. Wallace making a whistle-stop appearance in Creston. If you haven't voted yet, let your voice be heard today!

Even though our buildings are closed to the public, we're still working to make sure they stay in good shape. With support from the IA Dept. of Cultural Affairs and the Neighborhood Investment Corporation, local contractor Rob Valentine patched a couple of sagging spots on the porch ceiling of the Wallace House. When it warms up, a fresh new coat of paint will blend the old with the new. A shout out to historic preservationist Jack Porter who oversaw the entire project, which included a new roof above.

Updates taking shape to farmhouse, grounds at Country Life Center

#Iowahistory #ThisisIowa The Adair County Free Press is keeping local folks up to date about our Farmhouse restoration project. Most of the work is exterior, including historically-appropriate windows, siding and roof repairs. Private donations and a grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is funding the project. https://www.crestonnews.com/2020/10/15/updates-taking-shape-to-farmhouse-grounds-at-country-life-center/ae585j9/
