On view through January 31, 2027, the DAM is the only US venue for DIVA, organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Including Cher, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Prince, Tina Turner, and many more, DIVA celebrates the radical power, creativity and cultural impact of nearly 100 iconic performers. CBS Colorado's Lauren Whitney recently dropped by the DIVA exhibit at the Denver Art Museum. The exhibit pays tribute to some of the most world renowned high fashion.

CPR Classical presents: Behind the Baton LIVE! Inspired by the Denver Art Museum's new exhibition, DIVA, join conductor Scott O’Neil and Denver Art Museum Interpretive Specialist Holly Harmon for a journey from opera’s original prima donnas to the boundary-breaking icons of today 💃

Using musical demonstrations, visual storytelling, and conversation, Scott and Holly will explore how the diva evolved from a term for extraordinary talent into a symbol of independence, reinvention and defiance. The 90-minute program includes an audience Q&A. Virtual tickets also available.

Celia Cruz was born 101 years ago on this day, October 21, in 1925! The Cuban-American singer, known for her deep contralto voice, powerful personality, and colorful costumes, popularized “salsa” in the US after she was exiled from Cuba during Fidel Castro’s socialist regime. Her signature catchphrase, “azúcar,” nods to her Afro-Cuban identity, diasporic pride, and the labor of enslaved Black workers who maintained Cuban sugar plantations. Despite this painful history embedded in her work, Cruz’s music carries a message of “felicidad,” or happiness.

This costume was worn by Celia Cruz during a performance of the live album "Celia Cruz and Friends: A Night of Salsa" in 1999. See it in person at the Denver Art Museum in DIVA, on view through January 31, 2027. The DAM is the only US venue for DIVA, organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

We are excited to announce that our two Native Arts Artists-in-Residence for 2027 are Jontay Kahm and Erica Lord!

The Native Arts Artist-in-Residency program serves as an incubator for creative expression, providing artists with an opportunity to push their artistic practice, study and take inspiration from the museum’s collections, and engage and collaborate with museum visitors. For 2027, the museum invited two artists to spend three weeks in residency.

Jontay Kahm | In residency January 11-29, 2027
During his residency, Jontay Kahm is working on a new collection of couture pieces that spotlight how clothing can serve as costume, sculpture, fantasy, and personal mythology. The project will center on the idea of the garment as a tool for transformation. During his time at the museum, Kahm aims to expand his practice through research, sketching, material studies and to celebrate how fashion can inspire people to see themselves as powerful and beautiful.

Erica Lord | In residency September 6-24, 2027
Erica Lord’s current series "The Codes We Carry: Beads as DNA Data" are large-scale sculptures that incorporate computer-generated genetic data patterns from diseases disproportionately affecting Indigenous communities. The transformation of these patterns into loom-woven beaded artworks serves as an act of data sovereignty. For her residency, Lord will plan for future artworks by studying the beading techniques, color use, and design of both customary and contemporary artworks in the museum’s collection.

We are deeply saddened by the recent loss of Devon Dikeou. An artist, collector, and longstanding patron of the Denver Art Museum, Devon Dikeou's generosity and commitment to the arts can be felt by so many individuals and cultural institutions in our city.

In 2017, Devon was a recipient of the Denver Art Museum Key, an award presented to individuals and organizations that have dramatically impacted the contemporary art community in Colorado. She was a community builder - opening up her home and collection to celebrate exhibitions, artists, and the staff behind the scenes. She also promoted as many organizations and artists as she could through her weekly newsletter of Denver art happenings. We are deeply grateful for all that Devon gave to advance arts culture - and far beyond - and will miss her dearly.

Happy 86th birthday to artist Stanley Mouse, who is best known for his psychedelic rock poster designs of the 1960s. Many were created in collaboration with Alton Kelley!

The Denver Art Museum is proud to hold more than 70 works by Mouse in our architecture and design collection. A few of them are highlighted in this post, the first of which is featured in our newest exhibition DIVA.
