Meet artist Phumelele Tshabalala (born in 1987 in Johannesburg), a friend of artist Simphiwe Ndzube, who currently has an exhibition on view at the Denver Art Museum titled "Oracles of the Pink Universe."

Ndzube and Tshabalala developed a deep friendship rooted in their vocations as artists, a shared location as both have studios in Los Angeles, and their South African upbringing. Tshabalala contributed to "Oracles of the Pink Universe" (on view through October 10) by conducting two interviews with Ndzube: one for the exhibition catalog and the other for the online video segments that accompany the show.

Learn more about Tshabalala, his friendship with Ndzube, and his work, including "A monument to the iS'pantsula as mama feeds the community," which recently entered the permanent collection of the DAM, via our blog: https://bit.ly/3AcSmYf

Since the beginning of his young career, contemporary South African artist Simphiwe Ndzube has been exploring the interplay between the real and the magical, stitching together personal accounts and historical memories to give life to his creations.

A diversity of characters populates Ndzube's "Pink Universe"—on view now at the Denver Art Museum—including "Dondolo, the Witch Doctor’s Assistant," pictured here. Dondolo is a flamboyant figure, dressed in sartorial clothes, and is part human and part animal. He represents a mine laborer as he carries a blue precious stone in a wheelbarrow, a reference to diamond mining and land exploitation in South Africa.

After years of studying and testing paints used for outdoor sculpture and in tandem with the artist, "For Jennifer" by Joel Shapiro was recently conserved off site.

Working with the local firm Demiurge LLC, the five aluminum components were separated and taken down in December 2020. The faded paint film and deteriorated primer were carefully removed and a new, more robust paint and top coating were expertly applied. The sculpture was re-installed in August and is once again a brilliant blue - just as the artist had intended.

Artwork: Joel Shapiro, "For Jennifer," 2007-2011. Paint on aluminum; 384 x 192 x 192 in. In memory of Jennifer Moulton (1950-2004), Director of Planning and Development, City and County of Denver, 1992-2003. © Joel Shapiro/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York, 2009.798.
