Denver heard Dr. Justina Ford’s story last night. Now you can step inside the historic home where she practiced medicine and served her community for decades.

Mayor Mike Johnston opened and closed Denver’s State of the City address with the story of Dr. Ford, Colorado’s first licensed Black woman physician and one of the people whose courage helped shape this city.

Denied access to hospitals and professional medical organizations because of her race and gender, Dr. Ford built a practice from her Five Points home. She cared for patients from across Denver and delivered nearly 7,000 babies during her remarkable career.

Today, that home houses the Black American West Museum & Heritage Center.

Dr. Ford’s story is not simply part of Denver’s past. Her legacy still lives here.

Visit us Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3091 California Street and discover her story alongside the many Black pioneers who shaped the American West.

Discover the remarkable story of Cathay Williams, the only known woman Buffalo Soldier. She served bravely in the U.S. Army, helping shape life across the American West. Celebrate courage and resilience for all ages with this program in collaboration with Jeffco Library.

Do you or your family have a connection to the American Woodmen?

The Black American West Museum & Heritage Center is preparing a new exhibit on the Supreme Camp of the American Woodmen. Founded in Denver in 1901, the American Woodmen grew into a major Black fraternal benefit society with camps across the country. The organization provided life insurance and mutual aid, but it was also much more: a source of fellowship, leadership, pride, and community care—part of a long Black tradition of building institutions for protection, dignity, and collective power.

We are hoping to connect with individuals and families who can help us tell this story. Do you have memories, family stories, photographs, banners, badges, uniforms, regalia, certificates, programs, or other objects connected to the organization?
