TOMORROW! Don’t miss our artist talk with Sarah McKenzie & Aitor Lajarin-Encina at 4 pm.

Sarah’s 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 in our Main Gallery juxtaposes paintings of two institutional spaces: art museums and prisons. Aitor’s 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘮𝘴 explores domestic spaces and contemporary conditions with a playful surrealism.

The artists will explore the interesting affinities and related concerns of their work. Subjects include the role of the human figure, the poetics of scale, spatial illusion and the flatness of the picture plane, paintings as windows and windows as metaphors, and the influence of abstract painting on their work.

We are thrilled to return to the Dallas Art Fair with a presentation of new woven paintings by Miguel Arzabe and pigmented porcelain sculptures by Linda Nguyen Lopez. 💫

In this year’s colorful booth, historically craft-oriented modalities of weaving and hand-built ceramic sing in their respective material histories through modern aesthetic sensibilities.

Stop by Booth D6 between Thursday, April 10th and Sunday, April 13th to say hello and check out the work. 👋

David B. Smith Gallery is proud to announce its participation in NADA Miami with a solo booth featuring Denver-based artist Susan Wick. Tapping into Wick’s artistic legacy spanning over 50 years, the gallery will present an immersive booth installed as a transposed version of the artist’s home studio, with the 87-year-old artist present and active during the fair. The NADA Miami recreation of Wick’s home studio will be a vibrant wall-to-wall experience, ambitiously rendered to bring Wick’s unique domestic sensibility to an international audience.

The symbols Wick employs in her oeuvre are a rich blend of the mundane and the extraordinary, with recurring motifs such as travel, domesticity, nature, and mortality and loss. Among characters and objects such as divers, creatures, philosopher stones, floral still lifes, imaginative furnishings, mountains, and various means of transport, figures populate unrealities as either humans or birds. Wick’s fluid vocabulary of forms allows for a dynamic interplay of allegory and abstraction, with the ability to slide along the spectrum of becoming between the immaterial and recognizable.

Susan Wick (b. 1938, Madison, Wisconsin) is an artist living and working in Denver, CO. As part of the 1970’s San Francisco based performance collective Baker/Rapoport/Wick, she exhibited at the California State University, Los Angeles, University Art Museum, Berkeley, San Francisco Art Institute, Museé Des Beaux Arts, Laussane, Switzerland and the Bologna Biennial among others.

As a solo artist she had a one-person exhibition at the DeSaisset Art Museum, Santa Clara, California (1981), Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2006), and Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (2015).
