The F-16 is getting ready for a new paint job! 🎨✈️

Restoring an aircraft is often a years-long process, but this Thunderbird has to be ready by the opening night of our Spreading Wings Gala, where it will be revealed for the first time.

After arriving at Wings on a flatbed trailer, sun-faded, this F-16 is taking on a new mission. Our team of former pilots, maintainers, students, artists, and historians has spent months sanding, repairing, recreating missing parts, and preserving the marks that tell her story.

We’re returning her to the Thunderbirds livery she wore when she retired in 2010, honoring everyone who flew, maintained, and worked on this remarkable aircraft.

Join us on October 3 at the Spreading Wings Gala for the unveiling.

There are only 3 of these aircraft left in the world! 🤯

Developed during the Cold War, the RF-84K was designed for a unique mission; combining the speed and reconnaissance capabilities of the RF-84F with the ability to launch from a B-36 bomber. This innovative aircraft represents a fascinating chapter in the evolution of military aviation. Used during the 1950s by the US Air Force in the FICON program, these birds would undergo various trials. The program tested the abilities for B-36s to carry parasitic fighters, but was cancelled with the phjasing out of the B-36 and the introduction of the Lockheed U-2.

At Wings Over the Rockies, you can get an up-close look at the Thunderflash and discover how aircraft like this pushed the boundaries of speed, technology, and aerial reconnaissance. Uncover the stories behind its development, and experience the incredible innovations that continue to shape aviation today!

🎤 New on the Behind the Wings Podcast: Asteroid Bennu and the Ingredients for Life on Earth

In this episode, host Rick Crandall sits down with NASA astrochemist José C. Aponte, a member of the OSIRIS-REx sample analysis team.

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission traveled billions of miles to asteroid Bennu, collected a pristine sample of rock and dust, and brought it back to Earth for scientists to study.

You’ll hear what scientists discovered inside tiny samples of asteroid Bennu, including amino acids, the building blocks of DNA and RNA, and evidence of an ancient watery environment. Aponte also explains how these findings could help us understand the chemistry that existed before life began on Earth.

Check out Episode 80 at the link in bio or wherever you listen!
