The “Birds of a Feather” Collection

I first experimented with thread on canvas in 2014. I made these pieces before I fully understood the technique, but I was deep in music, and I kept thinking about what it would take to form a real band instead of staying a solo artist. Then it clicked. Birds of a feather flock together. I was picky about who I kept close because I needed friends who were a lot like me, people who could survive growth and friendship without turning it into friction or control. That was hard to find.

Looking at the work now, the pieces offer more insight than I could name back then. The peacock feather acts as hair in motion, like a metal band headbanging in synchronicity. It turns the proverb into choreography. “Flock together” becomes literal: synchronized movement, shared tempo, shared release. Headbanging is communal consent. Everybody agrees to the same wave. Everybody risks looking “too much” together. The feather-hair becomes a visual metronome, the same kind of timing you need to survive a real band: staying locked while still being individual.

The peacock feather also replaces the face to refuse extractive intimacy and to center the collective as a single living instrument. The “eye” is discernment. It represents the right to choose collaborators who can survive transformation without turning love into control. “Birds of a feather” is not sameness. For me, it’s shared practice. It’s people who can keep time together, repair together, and not punish each other for evolving.

Today, we witness a historic moment as the legendary Celia Cruz, known as the Queen of Salsa, becomes the first Afro-Latina to be honored on a U.S. quarter. 🌟 This isn't just about a coin; it's a powerful symbol of recognition and representation for Afro-Latinx communities everywhere. Celia's vibrant spirit, unapologetic pride in her Afro-Cuban roots, and undeniable talent transcended boundaries and broke down barriers in the music industry and beyond.

Her inclusion on U.S. currency is a monumental step in acknowledging the contributions of Black and Latinx women, who have long been overlooked in American history. This quarter isn't just about celebrating Celia Cruz; it’s about uplifting the voices and legacies of all Afro-Latinas who have paved the way and continue to inspire future generations.

Let this moment remind us of the importance of celebrating our diverse histories and advocating for more representation in every aspect of society. Celia Cruz’s legacy is a testament to the power of culture, resilience, and joy in the face of adversity.

🎉 Exciting News! 🎉

I am thrilled to announce that I have been officially accepted to present at the 2025 Denver Fringe Festival! This festival, known for celebrating the bold and the innovative, is the perfect platform for my groundbreaking performance that will blend AI art with ethical AI practices. My work focuses on decolonizing the biases hidden within data shadows, shedding light on how AI can perpetuate systemic oppression if left unchecked.

In this performance, I'll be exploring the intersections of technology, art, and social justice, challenging the dominant narratives and revealing the hidden truths within our data-driven world. By combining cutting-edge AI art with critical decolonial methodologies, I aim to not only entertain but also provoke thought and inspire change.

Join me on this journey as we dismantle the biases embedded in AI and imagine a future where technology truly serves us all, free from the shadows of discrimination and oppression.

Stay tuned for more updates, and mark your calendars for what promises to be a transformative experience at the Denver Fringe Festival 2025!
