Texas Fashion Collection Bridging academic and popular understandings of fashion history through research and programming

The Texas Fashion Collection collects, preserves, and documents historically significant fashion. First founded in 1938 by Stanley and Edward Marcus, in honor of their aunt, Carrie Marcus Neiman, the fashion collection was later merged with the Fashion Group of Dallas, who had created the Dallas Museum of Fashion at the Apparel Mart in the early nineteen-sixties. Their stewardship of the collection made it possible for the entire collection to be donated to the University of North Texas campus in 1972. The Texas Fashion Collection is operated as a non-profit enterprise by the University of North Texas through the College of Visual Arts and Design (CVAD) and housed on the UNT campus in Denton. Since 1972, UNT and CVAD have preserved and expanded the collection, which now includes nearly 20,000 historic and designer garments, accessories, and dress-related objects. Today, the TFC is housed at the Welch Street Complex at UNT and is overseen by Annette Becker. Becker has lead the TFC since fall 2016, following Myra Walker’s tenure starting in 1987.

Howard Greer spent his early career working for couturiers in Paris, designing theater costume, and creating costumes for the early years of film. In 1927, he opened a fashion design business - the context for this late 1930s dress. Here, Greer combined the drama of costume silhouettes that needed to read from a distance with the subtle beauty of this delicate textile.

Created by Jerro in the 1960s, these shoes delight both while being worn and being stored. They feature vibrantly colored “Hawaiian” hibiscus flowers - on the outside, manipulated into rosettes on the vamps, and as the lining to the insoles.

Created for the Chanel brand in 1978, this dress was likely designed by Philippe Guibourgé. The oversized floral motif makes the full silhouette feel even more dramatic. The purple ribbon belt and rounded collar further emphasize the design’s romantic nature.

These romantic shoes feature beading and embroidery creating dimensional flowers on a sheer pink ground accented with silver-toned leather. Markings on the insoles note Neiman Marcus as the retailer and Herbert Marcus as the company, though Herbert’s wife Beth most likely served as the designer of these lovely accessories.

Covered in silk satin, these green Jerro pumps from the mid-1960s featured hand-crafted silk flowers on the vamps. The flowers were cut from silk, dyed many vibrant colors, and pressed in molds to create the lifelike textures.

James Galanos masterfully utilizes textiles in his designs, as shown in this 1950s afternoon ensemble. Here, a wide swing coat features black textiles with rainbow-colored floral motifs throughout. The bright yellow lining complements the darker dress underneath, made of sheer textiles with applique of the same floral textile seemingly floating over the wearer’s body.

Carolina Herrera used luxurious textiles to create this structured, feminine design. Note the multicolored, large-scale floral motif with a repeat so large that you don’t see the same image twice on the bodice. That boldness is complemented by an all-over pattern seen through the subtle sheen of the weave of the silk damask textile.
