Whether it was the ocean, a marsh, or a river, Jim Harrison often included water in his paintings. As a child of the Rural South, he knew how essential water is to daily life. In this original painting — JH290 “Tree over River Study” — he captures a peaceful and tranquil scene. The painting is 13” x 19” in size and is acrylic on illustration board. JH462 "Barn Door" is a classic Jim Harrison painting available through Jim Harrison Gallery. The 12" x 16" painting is an acrylic on canvas. The weathered wood and rural setting brings one back to a simpler time and leaves you wondering what stories this place could tell if only these walls could talk.

As we celebrate the 250th birthday of our country, we remember a symbol of South Carolina cherished by Jim Harrison in several paintings.

The palmetto tree became a symbol of American resilience during the Revolutionary War after its spongy, fibrous logs were used to build a makeshift citadel at Fort Moultrie (then Fort Sullivan) on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. During the Battle of Sullivan's Island on June 28, 1776, the elastic and resilient palmetto wood successfully absorbed the impact of British cannonballs without shattering. This allowed the Patriots under Colonel William Moultrie to outlast the Royal Navy, marking one of the first decisive American victories of the war.

This legendary defense led to the enduring legacy of the palmetto tree in American history. South Carolina officially adopted the nickname — the Palmetto State — honoring the tree that secured their early victory. The South Carolina flag also prominently features the palmetto tree, a design rooted in Moultrie's troops and their revolutionary efforts.

Jim Harrison was proud to be an American with the Stars and Stripes appearing in several of his paintings through the years. As we approach the 250th anniversary of this great country, we know he would be proud of the way folks continue to connect with the beauty of rural America through his art.

Did you know? Jim Harrison's journey as an artist began when he first climbed onto a sign painter's scaffold on the side of McCartha's Hardware in Denmark, South Carolina. The Coca-Cola sign that he worked on that day with his mentor, J. J. Cornforth, was the first of more than 100 similar signs he painted over the next few years and shaped the future work of this South Carolinian in many ways.
