Something new is coming to the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum! 🎨

We're excited to introduce four talented exhibiting artists whose work will be featured at the museum throughout the year: Michelle Drummond of Drummond Fine Art, Amaya Estrada, Tracy Guiteau and Dorotha Grace Lemeh.

Each artist brings a unique perspective, exploring themes of identity, cultural heritage, storytelling, spirituality, memory and the world around us. Through quarterly, nine-week exhibitions, visitors will have the opportunity to experience their creativity and the diverse cultural influences that shape their work.

First up is Michelle Drummond!

From October 17 through December 19, 2026, visitors can explore Drummond's vibrant use of fiber, organic forms, color and texture as she examines connection, resilience, environmental issues and cultural richness.

We're looking forward to sharing the work of these four incredible artists with our community throughout the year!

Before Delray Beach became the city we know today, communities like West Settlers were already laying its foundation.

The historic West Settlers neighborhood was home to many of Delray Beach’s early African American and Caribbean residents. Here, families built homes, opened businesses, established churches, educated their children and created a strong community during an era when segregation shaped where Black residents could live, work and gather.

West Settlers became home to important institutions in Delray Beach’s Black history, including the city’s first Black school, church and hotel.

This photograph from EPOCH Archives offers a glimpse into that history through something beautifully ordinary: two women walking along a neighborhood road. Images like this help us remember that history is not only found in major events. It lives in the streets people walked, the neighborhoods they built and the everyday lives that helped shape Delray Beach.

A history degree can take you further than you might expect.

Charlene Farrington, Executive Director of the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, joined Marjorie Waldo, Host and Executive Director of Arts Garage, on the Culture Under Fire podcast to talk about the possibilities that come with studying history and how that knowledge can be applied in a variety of fields.

Charlene speaks to the importance of helping young people see beyond the traditional paths they may associate with a history degree. Museums and cultural organizations can be spaces where that knowledge becomes practical, meaningful work while also connecting people to the stories and experiences that shape our communities.

Creating those connections starts with showing the next generation that their education can open more doors than they may realize.

Before pharmacies were on every corner, places like Economical Drug Store were part of the heartbeat of the community.

Joseph Jenkins, pictured here behind the counter of his Economical Drug Store at Rosemary Avenue and 4th Street in West Palm Beach, was a pharmacist, entrepreneur and respected member of the city’s Black community.

During segregation, Black-owned businesses like Jenkins’ provided more than goods and services. The drugstore was a place where neighbors could gather, socialize and connect at a time when many public spaces excluded them.

This photograph offers a glimpse inside that history, from the prescription counter and rows of medicine to the man who built a business that served his community.

Stories like Joseph Jenkins’ are an important part of Palm Beach County’s Black history, and they deserve to be remembered and shared.

The way we tell history matters.

Charlene Farrington, Executive Director of the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, joined Marjorie Waldo, Host and Executive Director of Arts Garage, on the Culture Under Fire podcast for an important conversation about why museums have a responsibility to tell history correctly and preserve the stories that help us understand our communities.

Charlene highlights the importance of historical context and the role museums play in ensuring meaningful moments in our history are understood—not simply remembered.

When we preserve these stories and share them accurately, we create opportunities for our community and future generations to learn, connect and better understand where we come from.
