"Josephine Louise Barry, who was inducted into the Santa Fe Trail Hall of Fame a year ago, was born in Keats, Kansas on Sept. 12, 1910.

The book, published in 1972 by the Kansas State Historical Society, is an astounding 1,232 pages, in addition to a 60-page index. The book is written in annal form — historical accounts of events arranged in order of time. It includes information about Kansas Indian cultures, #Spanishconquistadors, French voyageurs and army officers, Lewis and Clark, #ZebulonPike, and missionaries, as well as travel on the Santa Fe and Oregon trails"

The work of a local woman born 109 years ago is still used today for those doing research on the Santa Fe Trail and other frontier topics.

Our local chapter of the Old Spanish Trail Association, La Vereda del Norte, is working with the National Park Service to place interpretive signs and road markers along the Trail in Costilla and Saguache counties. We are in the planning stage and hope to have the signs on the ground by 2020. We are also putting together a site stewardship program where we will monitor the Old Spanish Trail in the San Luis Valley for damage from development and vandalism. We want to monitor rock art and stone cairns that are near the OST and may be associated with the Trail, either prehistorically or historically. In the future, we want people who get out sight seeing and hiking near the trail location to contact us about possible damage to the Trail.

"In October 2014, three experienced horseback riders began the first leg of a journey across the Old Spanish Trail, a 1,200-mile route that served as the main trade artery between Los Angeles and Santa Fe, New Mexico in the 1800s."

"Richard Waller, Otis Calef and Jim Clark finished that journey in 2015. No one had attempted to ride the trail’s full length since 1849, according to “The Old Spanish Trail,” a documentary directed by Benedicte Schoyen that chronicles their ride."

The members of La Vereda del Norte Chapter of the Old Spanish Trail and the communities of the San Luis Valley need to take action on the East Fork Trail signage and development of that portion of the route. We attended meetings regarding this in December and January in Alamosa and Ft. Garland.

Note the support from the Colorado General Assembly with the passage of HB 18-1351 in 2018: "the bill recognizes the significance of the Old Spanish National Historic Trail as a historic resource in Colorado." And with the support of Carol Clark, Park Ranger - Interpretive Specialist and Cory Donnelly of the National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior, this project has been approved.

LVdN Chapter will meet to get this process started Friday November 2 at the Windsor Hotel at 11:30, downtown Del Norte. Lunch is available. I will send a separate email from Vicki Felmlee, who is the Old Spanish Trail Association president, with attachments noting requirements for approval for Costilla, Alamosa, Saguache and Colorado officials.

However,we need your help, the officers of La Vereda del Norte Chapter feel we must get assistance from other organizations and the San Luis Valley Museum Association for this to happen. It greatly benefits the folks in Alamosa, Conejos and Saguache Counties to bring in tourists and heritage tourism to the San Luis Valley.

"It is with deep sadness today that we learn of the passing of Bill Chenoweth of Grand Junction. Many of you knew him - or knew of him - as a geologist and historian, and he was one of the five who worked successfully to get the Old Spanish Trail listed as one of our nation's historic trails in 2002. He was, in fact, the last of them.
We honored him at the Grand Junction conference two years ago for his many contributions to our trail."
