Idyllic island setting offers jam/chutney hand-made on-site, found object sculptures from birdies to whole buildings--acres of exploring; and a classy gift shop. NERVOUS NELLIE’S JAMS AND JELLIES are all made in a tiny white clapboard Jelly Kitchen--far off on the edge of things--in an idyllic island setting. We cook, cap and label hundreds of jars by hand most every weekday, using a small batch p

rocess that makes the flavor sing! Fifteen flavors of jam, chutney and marmalade, made the old-fashioned way with mostly Maine fruit, cane sugar and no nasty stuff. From May to October our Shop is where you will find not only jam, but also mostly Maine-made goodies - aprons, potholders, towels, mixes, softies, baby bibs and rattles, cribbage boards, soap, glassware and pottery. There is a sandbox for little ones, Adirondack chairs for old ones, checker boards for play, and woods and meadows to explore. Nellieville is a found object sculpture village built and furnished by sculptor Peter Beerits: a Western town, juke joint, general store, blacksmith shop, good ol’ boy garage and a church. Peter sells dozens of sculptures every year, from little birdies to giant ogres, as well as an eclectic assortment of commissions. We ship jam, and the dozens of Maine crafts found in our shop, all over the US and package gifts for any occasion. Our holiday gift boxes are tied with a red and white gingham ribbon. SAVE THE DATE - Story Week with Melody Bates July 7th - 11th here on the grounds of Nellieville!

This year Peter has created a new "stage" for Melody's version of "Sleeping Beauty" which she wrote and will present for the first time.

Think of her performance here as Faerie Queen Story Hour: wandering through the art-filled woods of Nellieville, you happen upon the Faerie Queen, book open on her lap, ready to tell you a story. Each day features several of her original tales complete with couture costumes.

These original and adapted classic fairy tales are suitable for all ages and dressing up in your favorite costume is encouraged.

Time for a shout out to Patti our jam cook extraordinaire who keeps the kitchen humming along 5 days a week all year round. She and her sidekick, Rabbit, turn fresh & frozen fruits into the delightful jams and chutneys that our customers have grown so fond of.

We have 9 jams to choose from including the traditional Wild Maine Blueberry Preserve that literally travels the world (in checked luggage) as gift, and 6 savory chutneys.

The shells are sustainably sourced from hardworking Maine oyster farmers then decoupaged with images of Maine and hand gilded with classic gold leaf edges.

They can can be used as a ring dish, trinket dish, salt cellar, or simply as a memory keepsake from coastal Maine.

There's nothing like hand made pottery - for yourself to enjoy or as a gift. Not only is this stoneware beautiful but it's made to last.

A women owned and operated pottery in Woolwich, ME, turns out this wonderful line of reasonably-priced functional stoneware that "relies on basic form and shape for its beauty, reminiscent of the past." Both glazes intermix nicely on your table.

It's dishwasher, microwave and (if heated gradually) oven safe.

And if you ask me, food tastes better eaten from a handmade dish or bowl :)

"Are you Nellie?" and "How did this place start?" are common questions from first timers.

If you've never visited and we seem to be a bit of a mystery - here's a bit about us.

Nellieville, or Nervous Nellie's, is an eclectic campus covering several acres in an idyllic island setting, a one-time homestead and heirloom orchard at the edge of a spruce forest. We make about 300 jars of jam a day by hand year-round in the jelly kitchen--a tiny white Cape cottage. Peter's sculpture workshop is a former general store that was moved here in several large pieces on a flatbed truck (early one morning before the school buses got running).

Our tiny shop is filled with our jams and jellies, housewares, gifts, and clever things made by Maine artisans. A cross between classy and rustic. No lighthouse, moose or lobster key chains.

The grounds comprise a meadow and woods filled with sculptures made by artist, Peter Beerits from discarded metal, locally-milled lumber, dump-foraged material. A Western town--jail, lawyer's office, fortune teller, hotel, saloon, Chinese laundry--sits shoulder to shoulder with a Delta-style juke joint, a Deer Isle general store (which Peter took apart and reassembled here), a church, a castle, wizard's tower, 50's garage complete with jam session, all comprise Nellieville, a lifelong work in progress.

Let's just say visiting Nervous Nellies is an experience you won't soon forget!

We also have plain unpainted blue bird houses that will weather nicely in your yard and new this year a "build your own" birdhouse kit... a great project to do with your children :)
