North Carolina-based painter Tony Griffin will be the Deer Isle Artists Association’s artist in residence for the month of April. He will spend the first part of his residency painting the landscapes of Deer Isle in the last moments of winter, capturing the region's distinctive light and terrain en plein air.

In the latter weeks of his residency, Tony will shift his focus to figures and portraits. He welcomes local artists and community members as models. Tony hopes that this exchange, painting people who live in the community and those who may themselves be makers, will open new dimensions in his practice and deepen his connection to the place and community he has long admired from a distance during his visits to the area.

Tony’s work (deeply rooted in the tradition of the Renaissance masters) spans portraiture, figure painting, and plein air landscape. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and has been exhibiting work throughout North Carolina and beyond for over four decades. His paintings are held in private and institutional collections, including Duke University, and he currently has work on view in Horizon Line at the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum.

Tony will host a free portrait workshop at DIAA on Friday, April 17, from 1-4pm. Participants will bring their own drawing or painting materials. Space is limited. Please RSVP by April 10 to [email protected].

Tony will host a closing reception and artist’s talk at the gallery on Saturday, April 25, from 1-4pm. Tony will discuss his art and residency experience at 2pm.

The gallery will be open to the public 10am - 3pm Thursdays - Saturdays, and whenever the OPEN flag is flying. Please come in, see some paintings, introduce yourself and consider being a portrait model!

JANUARY RESIDENCY AT DIAA Gallery - ALL THINGS FIBER with Sarah Doremus and Maureen Farr

Sarah Doremus and Maureen Farr, both metalsmiths, will be in residence at the Deer Isle Artists Association for the month of January 2026, focusing on All Things Fiber.

As metalsmiths, they work with hard materials, and frequently need tools to help them shape, cut, and form metal into small works of art and jewelry. When thinking about a shared residency, they decided to have some fun with soft materials, including yarns and fabrics.

The gallery will be set up with two sewing machines, fabrics, mountains of yarn, and a variety of knitting needles and needle felting supplies.

Their focus during the month will be rug tufting, with each having ideas and designs they want to experiment on. There will be at least three frames for rug tufting – one large frame will be dedicated to anyone who would like to come in and add to the overall piece.

They will be in the gallery at least four hours a day, Monday - Friday each week. The public is invited to drop in whenever the flag is out and the lights are on to work on the public piece, to work on their own project, to try out any of the various fiber media available, or to sip tea and chat.

The artists will host a closing reception to show the month’s completed projects on Friday, January 30 from 3-5pm. Light refreshments and beverages will be provided.
