Check this out!! Associate Professor of Art and Visual Communication Aaron Lurth’s “Movie Night” is featured in the Figge Art Museum exhibition “A Surreal Lens: Photography From the Figge Collection.”

“A Surreal Lens features artists who craft dreamlike imagery— whether through elaborate set-ups or post-production edits— that challenge our perceptions. While not all identify with Surrealism, their work taps into its spirit focusing on the subconscious, the uncanny, and the absurd.”

Located in Davenport, Iowa, the Figge Art Museum is the premier art exhibition and education facility between Chicago and Des Moines and is home to one of the Midwest’s finest art collections.

Lurth’s photograph is also currently on display in our very own Center for the Arts! You can view this piece in the CFA, located to the left of Room 119 and the Makerspace, or, if you’re in the Davenport area, be sure to check out his image at the Figge! (Up until June 21st).

Meet Elliot- Senior Theatre and Visual Communication Double Major!

Elliot serves as Marketing Director for SPIN Theatre and as Social Media Chair for Undeclared Acapella.

Reflecting on his experience with the VPA, he says:
“In both of my majors, I value the broad range of subjects I’ve been able to explore. As a Visual Communication major, I’ve studied photography, graphic design, videography, media, journalism, computer science, and much more. Luther has provided me with opportunities to broaden my base across so many disciplines, which has made me into a more versatile and well-rounded artist.”

Elliot shares his senior advice:
“A piece of advice I’d give to underclassmen is to try new things! There are so many great opportunities at Luther to learn or try something new, many of which you won’t get the chance to do again after college. I wouldn’t be a Visual Communication major if I didn’t decide to try something new and take graphic design during my sophomore year.”

Take a peek into a critique day with Photography I!

For this project, students were challenged to make light the central subject of their images. Some explored night photography, while others staged scenes where light itself became the focus. After printing their work, students displayed their images and participated in small-group critiques to discuss technique, intention, and creative choices.

Curious about our Photography I course? Instruction includes technical aspects of digital photography, including camera function, exposure control, and creative control, as well as discussion on the contemporary and historical impact of the medium. The format of the class includes lectures, visual presentations, lab time, individual research/presentations and regular critiques.

Introducing senior Art and Visual Communication major, L’Engle Charis-Carlson! L’Engle is involved in Luther College’s Symphony Orchestra, the Viz Biz Club, Performing Arts Committee (PAC), CHIPS Newspaper, the Arco Project (String Instruments), and helps out in the costume department for SPIN productions.

Reflecting on her experience at Luther College, she says:
“I love that Luther allows us to study so many different things that pique our interest. I’ve been able to take lots of classes, within the VPA and outside, that have grown my knowledge of such cool subjects and fed my love for learning. I also enjoy that having a limited number of professors allows students to create year-spanning connections with them.”

L’Engle shares about her experience studying abroad with Luther College:
“Last spring semester I studied abroad in Nottingham, England, which was the most amazing experience! The group I went with had such great camaraderie and the location was beautiful. It was so fun to walk around and hear all the different accents, so different from ours. It was a location where not a lot of Americans go, so it feels like we’ve got quite a personal connection to the city. I loved that we could always go out and find something fun to do, because the city was definitely much bigger than Decorah. There were also lots of opportunities for travel within the UK, and I was able to go visit 9 countries in total, with the group and solo traveling. I also traveled to Vienna for J-Term with the orchestra my freshman year, and that was amazing too! In fact, I decided to go back this past Christmas. There’s always more to do. I would definitely recommend studying aboard with Luther if you have the means!”

Welcome to Wheel Throwing I, an introductory course focusing on the design and creation of functional ceramics!

Students explore beginning wheel and off-wheel clay forming and surfacing techniques in the making of utilitarian ceramic objects, specifically bowl and cup forms. In this pursuit, students explore and enact aspects of art and design via form, function, and surface. Through projects students activate the creative process through research and investigation, experimentation and creation, and reflection and critiques of their ceramic works.

Following Wheel Throwing I, students can take Wheel Throwing II, where they will continue to build from the content and skills they have acquired.

Meet Thea- Senior Visual Communication and Nordic Studies double major!

Reflecting on her experience with the VPA, she says:
“I have really enjoyed the way that the VPA is a host of multiple forms of creativity on campus! Especially as a Vis Com Major, having the computer labs, maker space, photography studios and other places we can use to expand our hands-on experience.”

Thea shares her senior advice:
“This sounds cliche but don’t feel like you have to commit to a major freshman year, take advantage of the Liberal Arts education and take courses in different areas to explore your interests :)”
