Calling all high school and college students! Help us spread a positive message through the power of art and reading!

As part of The Big Read, DAAC is hosting a Bookmark Design Contest inspired by A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. Create an original design that shares a positive message, and you could win a $100 prize! The winning design will be printed on bookmarks and shared with readers throughout our community.

Designs can be digital or traditional, and photography and graphic design are welcome, too. No AI-generated designs will be accepted.

Deadline for entries is November 16, 2026, at 11:59 PM

Check out the flyer for all the details, and start creating! We can't wait to see what you come up with.

🎃Accepted Artwork: Rock N'Fella, Acrylic
🦇Artist Statement: Through the looking glass of another one’s mind, an artwork can be representational, expressive, abstract or irrational; but it is always authentic. My work is more often expressive, full of color and meaning and symbolism. I’ve always been inspired by popular culture, cartoons and the like. The bright colors and surrealist nature of cartoons has always attracted me and in my recent work, I strive to read our times like a tarot card; Cryptic meanings and symbols as well as a candy colored palette akin to a nightmare at the circus evoking a sense of unease while attracting the viewer closer. The horrors of the over saturation of media and wanton commercialism bleed through like a stained glass window from some dystopian future. Though the images come from my mind, the pictures are very real. This is a mirror to our world and it’s looking back at you. One has to ask, which world of the two is the truly insane one?

Wicked is on display in the Underground until November 11!

Jessica is primarily a watercolor artist who also works in pastels, celebrating the interplay of light and color and finding joy in the art-making process.

See our national juried exhibit of fine art on display until September 24th, 2026 at the Madden building's Anne Lloyd Gallery in downtown Decatur!

The exhibit features work by artists from New York to California as well as Illinois with an array of mediums, styles and themes.

We had a wonderful opening reception and award presentation with our judge Lyle Salmi's insightful comments.

Check out our Student Artist of the Month Kamilah Hernandez's clay and sculptural pieces on display September only at Gallery 510!

Kamilah is a senior at Clinton High School and Traci Manning is her art instructor. Below is what Kamilah had to share:

"When I was little I used to watch this show called art attack and they showed you how to do different
types of art and I use to do every possible thing that I could, and if not at least tried. My first “ big “
project was a farm with play-doh, so I did the chicken, and the pig, etc all of the farm animals for my
school, that was in kindergarten, when I got into elementary I stopped doing it because there was no art
classes but I remember that my mom got me this little packet of different kinds of colors, pencils, paint,
markers and I was so happy I used it all the time after school. When I got to junior high I started painting
and building things with different kinds of supplies, people started buying the things that I made, and that
inspired me to keep doing art. Now that I’m in High school I’m so glad I get the chance to keep improving
my skills, continuing working, drawing, painting, building, I feel like I’m not expressing it very well, but
you person that is reading this, trust me when I tell you that having the opportunity to make art in any way
possible makes me so happy. It fills my soul in a way that nobody could imagine, and that I can’t even
describe. My mom always described my art as something weird, but weird in a unique and beautiful way.
My family has always encouraged me to keep doing it, and I’m glad they do it because without them
telling me what they like, what they don’t, what could I add or change, what should I work more on, I
don’t know what I would do, this story could go and go, on and on, but I feel like this is to much. Thank
YOU so much for reading my short story.
