Governor Oglesby Mansion Experience a piece of Decatur, IL history

The Italianate style mansion with over 8 fireplaces, maple and walnut floors, and the authentic Oglesby library is an incredible sight to see with an even more interesting story to tell. Governor Oglesby was a father, a US Senator, a Civil War general, a 3-time Illinois Governor, and a friend of Abraham Lincoln. Touring his home is only a small window into his life during the 1800's but an incredible way to experience Macon County history.

Today is the last day to view our gorgeous quilt exhibit. What a marvelous contribution to our August museum tours!! Thanks to the Decatur Quilters Guild.
We are open 2-4 today. Suggested donation is $5 per adult and $2 per child.

Oglesby volunteered during the Mexican War, serving as first lieutenant of Company C, Fourth Illinois Infantry, and commanding troops in the Vera Cruz and Cerro Gordo battles. During the Civil War, he served as colonel of the Eighth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, was wounded in the battle of Corinth, and rose to the rank of major general when he was discharged in May 1864.

General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s famous captured prosthetic leg artifact is on display in the Governor Oglesby Mansion Museum. It is on display in the Governor’s library. It is always a popular artifact during our tours.

Illinois volunteers from the 4th Regiment seized the wood prosthetic limb during the Mexican-American War at the Battle of Cerro Gordo in 1847.
