☀️ June 21st marks the Summer Solstice, the official beginning of astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

☀️ The occurs when Earth's tilt positions the Northern Hemisphere most directly toward the Sun.

☀️ It brings us the longest day and shortest night of the year, with more daylight than any other day on the calendar.

☀️ More daylight doesn't mean the hottest temperatures. The warmest days of summer are still ahead.

☀️Cultures around the world have observed the summer solstice for thousands of years through festivals, ceremonies, and seasonal traditions.

🎨 A journey through Florida’s wild and untamed past…

Featured here is General Grant on the Ocklawaha (February 14, 1880), illustrated by artist Frank Hamilton Taylor for Harper’s Weekly. This striking scene captures the beauty of Florida’s waterways during a time when steamboats traveled through the lush landscapes of the Ocklawaha River.

Taylor (1846–1926), of Rochester, New York, was part of an important but often overlooked group of artists known as “Special Artists” or visual documentalists, capturing moments of American history through illustration. Others in this field went on to become widely celebrated, including Winslow Homer and Granville Perkins.
