Janet Guthrie Honored in New Motorsports Hall of Fame of America Exhibit

Janet Guthrie - who was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2021 - became the first woman to race in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500 in 1977, opening doors for women in motorsports. She was the first woman to earn top-10 starts and finishes in both IndyCar and the NASCAR Cup Series. In 1978, she finished a 500 career-best ninth at Indy with a team she built and ran, then posted an overall career-best fifth-place finish at Milwaukee in 1979.

In the Hall's newest exhibit, Guthrie’s racing suits, her Indianapolis 500 helmet and two trophies are on display. One trophy is for a class win in the 1967 12 Hours of Sebring with another woman driver, Liane Engeman; while the other is the 1964 Watkins Glen 500 trophy, earned with Richard Mooney, after a class victory and sixth-place overall finish in the inaugural running of the sports car race at Watkins Glen International.

The new exhibit can now be viewed at the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in the Daytona International Speedway Tickets & Tours Building, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We join the motorsports world in mourning the loss of 2013 Motorsports Hall of Fame of America inductee Alex Zanardi, a true multi-sport champion and a universally recognized athlete adored for his incredible spirit of competition and his even more gracious and loving nature off the track.

He overcame more adversity and challenges in his short 59 years to serve as an inspiration and role model for people of all ages and abilities around the world. Quite simply, he excelled and set the standard in everything he did, including quickly becoming CART IndyCar's top driver after winning Rookie of The Year in 1996 and taking the championships in 1997 and 1998. He even came back from losing his legs in the horrifying late race accident in Germany in 2001 while leading and returned two years later - now fitted with two prosthetic legs and in a car with assisted and hand operated brakes and accelerator - to the same track to complete his final 13 laps of the race and take the checkered flag.

He later applied this same determination and no-quit drive to paralympic handcycling and unsurprisingly dominated the sport for a decade. He secured four Paralympic gold medals and two silvers at London 2012 and Rio 2016, won 12 World Championship titles between 2013 and 2019 and also captured major marathons and a record time in the Ironman World Championship. Tragically, while competing in a relay in 2020 that included handcycling competitors, Zanardi was involved in an accident with a truck in an oncoming lane. He sustained extreme injuries, and he and his family were shown great respect by worldwide adoring fans and thousands of professional colleagues as his wife Daniela and other loved ones cared for him in private the last five years plus.

It is hard to believe this ever-positive hero and universal inspiration is gone so soon, but his loving and caring spirit in everything he did is the gift he gave us all.

Race in Peace Alex.

Congratulations!
