Janet Guthrie Honored in New Motorsports Hall of Fame of America Exhibit
Janet Guthrie - who was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2021 - became the first woman to race in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500 in 1977, opening doors for women in motorsports. She was the first woman to earn top-10 starts and finishes in both IndyCar and the NASCAR Cup Series. In 1978, she finished a 500 career-best ninth at Indy with a team she built and ran, then posted an overall career-best fifth-place finish at Milwaukee in 1979.
In the Hall's newest exhibit, Guthrie’s racing suits, her Indianapolis 500 helmet and two trophies are on display. One trophy is for a class win in the 1967 12 Hours of Sebring with another woman driver, Liane Engeman; while the other is the 1964 Watkins Glen 500 trophy, earned with Richard Mooney, after a class victory and sixth-place overall finish in the inaugural running of the sports car race at Watkins Glen International.
The new exhibit can now be viewed at the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in the Daytona International Speedway Tickets & Tours Building, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
