Emile Gruppé was a legendary New England Artist. He was best known for his Monet-influenced seascapes and landscapes. Though primarily working in the Impressionist tradition, he is a second-generation artist son of Charles Gruppé, a well-known artist. Gruppé which he combined a dynamic brand of Realism with the light and atmospheric concerns of Impressionism. His mature work is much admired for its robust brushwork, rich palette, thick impasto, and keen sense of compositional design.
Fort Jefferson, located on Garden Key part of the Dry Tortugas located 70 miles west of Key West, Florida is home to the largest Civil War fort in American History. The massive structure, never fully completed, was in control of the Union Army for the entire war and was used as a federal prison for deserters and criminals.
The fort, a popular destination for boaters exploring the Gulf of Mexico, is depicted in this painting by Emile Gruppé, with a cabin cruiser docked alongside the fort and the lighthouse visible in the background. Using his signature Impressionistic techniques, Gruppé captures the essence of a bright yet windy day, infusing the scene with vibrant energy and atmospheric light.
