🎉🦉 Happy Birthday to the one and only Joe Burrow! 🦉🎉

Born June 15, 2018 at the Fort Worth Zoo, Joe flew into our hearts when he arrived at the Boonshoft on December 15, 2023 and has been charming the internet and our guests ever since!

Joe has gone viral multiple times thanks to his signature sitting style perched proudly on his tarsometatarsus (that’s bird anatomy speak for part of his lower leg!) with his feet sticking straight out in front of him like he’s lounging on a beach day.

While it might look a little silly, this is totally normal behavior for burrowing owls. In fact, Joe’s entire vibe is part of his charm. You can usually spot him chilling in the sand under the heat lamp! 🏗️✨

Help us wish Joe the happiest of birthdays!

🌳✨Step into the enchantment of Forest Faire, where the beauty of the woodlands meets a celebration of natural history. Our premier gala-style fundraiser, EcoBash – Forest Faire, supports the mission of the Dayton Society of Natural History and its $10.5 million capital campaign, A River Runs Through Us.

Tickets: https://boonshoft.org/events/eco-bash/

Enjoy an elegant sit-down dinner, bid on extraordinary experiences at our live auction, and relax in the bourbon and cigar lounge within the Bieser Room of Wonders. With a limited number of tickets available at $250, this intimate and unforgettable evening offers a unique opportunity to support the bold vision of the Boonshoft Museum.

Funds raised will power the next phase of our museum transformation—bringing Dayton’s natural history and water story to life for generations to come.

✨Collections Spotlight!✨

Today is National Pigeon Day. This day acknowledges the significant role that homing pigeons played as messengers in both World War I and World War II, carrying important military information to and from front line troops. This Rock Pigeon or Rock Dove (Columba livia) was born in 1944 in Italy and was one of the many pigeons used in World War II to carry messages. These messages could include critical information such as the position of enemy troops and were oftentimes more secure than radio messages. Pigeons are excellent navigators, using Earth’s magnetic field to chart their course, and can find their way home over long distances.

Join us this Sunday, June 14th, for Sensory Sunday. On this day we open the museum two hours early and offer a less stimulating experience.

During these special hours, we adjust lighting and sound and have trained volunteers and additional staff available. Sensory Sundays are sponsored by Brighter Tomorrow Foundations, Dayton Children's Hospital and the Ohio Pain Clinic.

Don't forget to ask about our sensory bags, available at the front desk for free! Also, our new universal changing station is open which features an attached sensory room, offering a calming space for those who need it.
