โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ On May 30, 1912 โ€” 114 years ago today โ€” Wilbur Wright died at age 45.

๐Ÿ“ฐ โ€œWilbur Wright was seized with typhoid on May 4 while on a business trip in the East," reported The New York Times in its May 31, 1912, edition. "On that day he returned to Dayton from Boston and consulted Dr. Conklin, the family physician. He took to his bed almost immediately, and it was several days before his case was definitely diagnosed as typhoid. Throughout the early part of his illness Wright attributed his sickness to some fish that he had eaten at a Boston hotel. He explained to his physician, however, that he had no particular reason to believe that the disease originated from this source."

๐Ÿ›๏ธโœˆ๏ธ Carillon Historical Park celebrates the fathers of flight at the Wright Brothers National Museum, home to more Wright family artifacts than anywhere else in the world, including the 1905 Wright Flyer III: the worldโ€™s first practical airplane, the only airplane designated a National Historic Landmark, and what the brothers considered their most important aircraft.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ In May 1999 โ€” 27 years ago this month โ€” Dayton Congressman Tony Hall announced that the 1905 Wright Flyer III would receive $328,500 from President Bill Clintonโ€™s Save Americaโ€™s Treasures program to support its conservation. โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Thanks to generous matching gifts from Carillon Historical Park donors, the project grew to nearly $660,000, allowing the world-famous aircraft to undergo its first comprehensive preservation treatment since going on display in 1950.

Specially trained conservators in fabrics, metals, wood, and engines carefully examined every square inch of the plane. Crisscrossing wires were treated with rust-inhibiting wax, while the engine was disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled by Malcolm Collum, then with The Henry Ford Museum and later Chief Conservator at the Smithsonianโ€™s National Air and Space Museum. ๐Ÿ”ง๐Ÿ›ฉ๏ธ

๐ŸŽบ๐Ÿฅ STRIKE UP THE BAND! The Carillon Park Concert Band will play this Sunday, May 31st at 2 o'clock outside the James F. Dicke Transportation Center at Carillon Park!

๐ŸŽถ Dayton History proudly launched the Carillon Park Concert Band in 2010, preserving a beloved musical tradition that began in 1945 with the NCR Band at Old River Park. Today, the summer ensemble features around 100 talented high school musicians from across Greater Dayton.

Each year, students audition from schools throughout the region to perform everything from Broadway favorites and movie soundtracks to light classics and patriotic tunes. ๐ŸŽผโœจ

The bandโ€™s roots trace to legendary Dayton bandleader Clark Haines. After NCR closed Old River Park and discontinued the band following the 1995 season, Five Rivers MetroParks carried on the tradition for several years. When MetroParks ended its support in 2010, Dayton History stepped in to ensure the music would continue. โค๏ธ๐ŸŽต

For 80 years, every director of the ensemble has been a Kettering City Schools music teacher: Clark Haines, Jim Probasco, Mike Berning, and Bryce Newton. ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽถ

๐ŸŒณ In May 1841 โ€” 185 years ago this month โ€” lot clearing began at Woodland Cemetery, one of the nation's oldest rural garden cemeteries.

๐Ÿ‚ Today, more than 3,000 trees shade the graves of some of Daytonโ€™s most influential figures, including aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright, inventor Charles F. Kettering, poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, and humorist Erma Bombeck. They are also celebrated at Carillon Historical Park.

๐Ÿงบ In the 19th century, Woodland became far more than a cemetery. Its rolling hills and landscaped grounds served as one of Daytonโ€™s few park-like retreats, drawing families for Sunday picnics and outings. By 1867, officials had to restrict Sunday visits because crowds were damaging flowers and shrubbery.

โœˆ๏ธ Woodland also became deeply tied to the Wright family. When Wilbur Wright died in 1912, thousands lined Daytonโ€™s streets for his funeral procession, and the city paused for three minutes of silence to honor one of the fathers of flight.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Over the decades, Woodland expanded to more than 200 acres and evolved into both a historic landmark and an arboretum.

๐ŸŒŠ In May 1913 โ€” 113 years ago this month โ€” the Morgan Engineering Co. was hired to investigate possible flood prevention plans following the Great Dayton Flood of 1913, Ohio's worst natural disaster.

๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™‚๏ธ The companyโ€™s president, Arthur Morgan โ€” who later helped found the Tennessee Valley Authority and served as its first chairman โ€” personally took charge of the work.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ That same month, the Miami Valley Flood Prevention Association was organized in Dayton, representing five counties. It would eventually grow to include 10 counties across the Miami Valley.

๐Ÿ’ฐ By the end of May, Dayton citizens had united to raise $2 million โ€” some $67 million in 2026 dollars โ€” to study and begin work on preventing future floods. It was an extraordinary moment in the city's history.

๐Ÿ™๏ธ Carillon Historical Park's Great 1913 Flood Exhibit speaks to disaster, perseverance, and heroism. By bringing together numerous Flood-related artifacts, it tells the story of a grief-stricken city banding together to rise above adversity.
