What does one do when they feel like they were born in the wrong century? They volunteer and do living history! That is what Barrett Young has done for almost 20 years now and he loves it. Barrett is from Paola, KS and is doing an internship at Fort Larned NHS as part of Conservation Legacy/AmeriCorps. He started his internship in September and will be here through part of December. “I chose to do my internship here at Fort Larned NHS because I have volunteered here with my parents since 2009,” says Barrett, “and also did an internship here while at Pittsburg State in the summer of 2019. I enjoy coming out every Memorial Day Weekend to help bring the Fort to life as well as getting together with all of the other volunteers. I usually portray the role of a soldier and also help in the hospital kitchen and the bakehouse." In addition to volunteering here at Fort Larned, Barrett also volunteers at Fort Scott NHS and is a great fan of the National Park Service, visiting over 380 of the 430+ sites. Aside from his love for the National Park Service, Barrett also enjoys training his English Pointer, collecting scrap metal, and participating in 1800s and other dances. We are glad to have Barrett as part of the team and we hope you’re able to meet him before his internship is up!

If you’ve visited other NPS sites like Barrett has, what is your favorite (besides Fort Larned, of course)?
